A surprise fashion collection is a sure way to capture attention. And introduce yourself to the devotees of a long-established brand. And if that was the goal, newly appointed Valentino creative director Alessandro Michele succeeded. In the midst of Milan Men’s Fashion Week Summer 2025, Michele revealed 171 looks for Cruise 2025 during a zoom meeting with fashion editors.
As you may recall, Michele headed Gucci design from 2015-2022 (though he was involved with Gucci for years prior) before his sudden departure. Some of Gucci’s hottest bags of this century were released under his tenure, like the Gucci Dionysus and Marmont and the revival of the Diana, Jackie, Ophidia and Horsebit 1955. Branding, logos, and heavy ornamentation heavily figured in his bags; you knew it was Gucci, even when emboldened with the words “FAKE.”
Two months ago Michele landed at the helm of Valentino. Known lately for ladylike bags with a logoed “V”, the brand issues reliably pretty handbags. And for the moment, his surprise collection continues this trend. Flap bags with a V clasp, and larger bags with a prominent V dominate his virtual runway. As for whether and to what extent Michele brings his unique (and perhaps quirky) vision to Valentino handbags apparently will wait until a later collection.
For now, check out some of Michele’s new Valentino designs below. Let us know what you think.
