Is It Worth It?
The Hermes Evelyne may not be as well recognized as the Birkin or Kelly, but H lovers flock to the Evelyne because it is so functional and hassel-free. Since its release, there have been 3 versions of the Evelyne – The Evelyne I, Evelyne II, and Evelyne III. The I, II, and III refer to the generation, and we are currently on the 3rd generation. The original Evelyne, the Evelyne I, did not have an outside pocket like the current version. The Evelyne II featured an external pocket except on the smallest size. The most recent version, the Evelyne III, now sports an adjustable canvas strap.
The bag features the iconic “H” logo constructed from perforated holes. The Evelyne has a saddle bag shape, which seems to be a homage to Hermes’ equestrian roots.
Reasons to consider the Hermes Evelyne Bag:
- Casual and cute – It is an “unfussy” and simple bag. The giant H logo is its most identifying feature.
- Easy accessibility – You can grab items in and out of this bag more easily compared to the Kelly or the Birkin.
- Great for travel – In keeping with easy accessibility. The bag has convenient pockets and comes with an adjustable strap for crossbody wear.
- Great Entry Level Bag –It is relatively affordable compared to other Hermes Bags.
- Dress her up! You can easily sport a bag charm on this bag to accessorize further.
Features
- One Large Interior Pocket
- Leather Tab Closure (No Zipper)
- Outside Pocket
- Adjustable Strap from 36” to 52”
Materials
The Hermes Evelyne is available in two types of leather: Epsom or Clemence leather. The adjustable strap is made out of a durable canvas material. Compared Hermes’ other leathers, Epsom and Clemence are the best at withstanding damage.
Here are brief descriptions of each leather from our Hermes Learning Process feature:
Epsom – Epsom is embossed calfskin. Therefore the grain is not natural and after many years of wear, it can rub out and flatten. Colors appear vibrant and it’s a happy medium between togo and box calf. This is a good skin that adds to the versatility of your already existing Hermes handbag collection.
Clemence – Clemence is a thicker, heavier skin, especially compared to togo, which is Hermes’ most popular leather. Most people cannot visually tell the difference from togo since the bumps can look identical. By not properly stuffing a clemence handbag it will eventually slouch and the handles may topple onto its self. However, its strength is a stand out amongst other options. Durable and tough you’ll find this choice in Hermes luggage or travel bags.
Sizes
The Evelyne III is currently available in 3 different sizes and the largest size seen very rarely produced by Hermes now:

- GM (Large) – 33 cm
- TGM – 40 cm

Yay! This is my most favorite bag from Hermès! I got mine during PFW 2013 and it came with a two tone strap. I love wearing it. Thanks for the 101.
Great info, I don’t want hurt anyone’s feelings but It’s not for me! Is it intended to look like a saddle kind of?
Honestly, I get what you are saying – I have tried the Evelyne several times and I ended up selling it each time – I can appreciate its usefulness, which is why I have my eye on it all the time but it is just too casual for me in look and wear. I am still waiting for the perfect crossbody bag by Hermes, one that has as good a price point as the Evelyne..
If u are interested evelyne 16 , I have one with Rose Azalee Color
2001 Evelyne messenger I bags have a small inside pocket?? I know some of the older one’s didn’t have an outside pocket. But were they ever made with a small inside pocket?? Thank You!:)
The Ev is based on a horse groomers bag,
that is way there are holes in it. If you are not a horsey type then the Evelyn may not be your choice. The mini ones are pretty useless.
It is a total myth that the holes should be worn facing your body. I have heard SAs say
to wear it backwards. UGH.
Who would want the the stinky stuff on your clothes?
It is forever a mystery to me how these stories start; Hermes was an equestrian store before it was a fashion house.
I’m trying to determine if I have an authentic Hermes Evelyne III bag, the number under the stationary front flap is 75A, no circle or square around it. Everything else appears authentic, all the features, the letter of the logo, hermes on the hardware etc,..,
I bought my Evelyne III at Hermes’ flagship store on St. Honore in Paris where I have bought several bags. The salespeople there absolutely do instruct that the correct way to wear the bag is with the “H” facing your body. I personally prefer the outside pocket facing my body, however, so that I can safely keep my phone in it.
sounds like they drank the Kool aid. It doesn’t matter to me how you wear you your bag. I was just giving you the history. Enjoy it either way.
If you want you can wear your saddle upside down. lol
Thanks for this great article. I am needing a casual hands free bag, and this the Evelyne would be perfect. Are these hard to get at the Hermes FSH boutique in Paris? I’ve read about very long lines and customers not leaving with a bag. Wondering if this situation is just for Birkins and Kelly bags. I will be in Paris in September, and would to purchase an Evelyne while I’m there. Any advice would be appreciated.
I’d love it, if you’ve got it.
