One of the most frequent questions we get at PurseBop is how much does a Kelly cost? While you may think the answer can be found with a quick Google search, that’s simply not the case. Because Kellys (obviously) aren’t listed on the Hermès website, and you can’t really waltz into an H boutique and inquire about Kelly prices, it can be rather difficult to assess and compare one of the most noteworthy features of the Kelly. There’s no getting around the fact that this is one of the most exclusive—and hence expensive—bags in the world, and this is where we come in.
The question of Kelly prices is especially relevant after the somewhat discreet Hermès price hike earlier this year. (Basically, if you thought you knew K prices from before February, think again.) So let’s assess things systematically. We’ve done the math for you on the Kelly Retourne in Togo, which is the base price for a Kelly (the Sellier, whose standard leather is Epsom, is more expensive). The Analysis
First, let’s consider the price in comparison to the Birkin. (Read: Hermès Birkin Prices 2019: USA vs. Europe) Like the Birkin, the Kelly saw a price hike throughout the month of February in all three currencies. All Kelly sizes have increased by a few hundred dollars/euros/pounds. This is especially significant for the U.S., which hasn’t seen a bag price increase since 2015! Still, the Kelly Retourne is less expensive than a Birkin. The difference between the B and K ranges from $500 to $1,100, depending on size.
As for the comparison between currencies, it’s evident that it’s still less expensive to buy a Birkin abroad in continental Europe or the U.K. than in the U.S. As the above charts show, the savings are greater by almost $1,000 when purchasing in euros than in pounds, but the savings are substantial in both currencies. For example, the Kelly 25 is 19.5% less expensive in euros than in dollars, and 10.9% less expensive in pounds.
However, as you probably know, these aren’t the final prices, so to speak. Yes, they’re the “sticker price,” but when shopping abroad it’s always important to take into account the VAT refund and Custom Duties, which can change your total cost—not usually significantly, but it depends on the country.
