Our Take Earlier This Week: Chanel is Likely to Increase Prices in Europe
And it’s official – as we predicted, prices in (at least parts of) Europe are up. But they’re up much more in Sweden than anyone thought! Given that Swedish prices are normally harmonized with the rest of Europe, we’re now confident in speculating significant price increases across the continent.
A longtime reader of ours visited a Chanel boutique in Stockholm, Sweden earlier today. After waiting in line, she was luckily able to get her hands on a Chanel Square Mini in black lambskin for 29,270 SEK ( equivalent to $2995 USD and €2730 euro). BUT the tag on another square mini bag in pink reflected the new price of 37,290 SEK. This is an increase of 27.4% for the Mini! The store honored the old price, but confirmed that prices will be going up this Monday, May 11. An identical price increase in the US and Europe would put the bag at $3,815 and €3478 respectively.

There’s reason to believe similar increases are on the way for the Small Classic Flap. We have reports that a small Classic Flap bag formerly priced at SEK 49,000 is now SEK 61,000. Converted into U.S. dollars (and €) that’s a move from $5014 (€4571) to $6242 (€5690). By our calculations, that’s a 24.5% rise.

We are now quite confident that other Classic bags, as well as the Boy, Gabrielle and Chanel 19 will see price increases. We suspect Chanel will harmonize prices globally so the increases will be relative to each region’s currency and the bag’s current market price.
Chanel bag prices on the U.S. website and app have disappeared over the last day or so which often foreshadows a price change. And rarely, if ever, do prices go down…
