Summer is finally here, and it sure looks different from what we envisioned just a few months ago. Who foresaw social distancing, wearing masks, and avoiding pleasures we once took for granted. Even as countries, communities and businesses reopen, normal activities are fraught with risk assessment. A summer of carefree travel, dining, shopping, picnics, and outdoor concerts, all require extra thought and preparation.
Which of the summer time activities do you miss the most? For us, it definitely is travel. Visiting family and friends near and far, seeing new (or old favorite) places, hitting the road, or air, was always part of summer. For international travelers, those trips often included a bit of vacation shopping for that coveted designer handbag. And, if you were really lucky, you might even get a bargain based on price disparity among countries.
But if life gives you lemons, we are turning it into lemonade and providing a different perspective.
Remember the Chanel price increase updates that we brought to you just last month (read:Chanel Price Increase Confirmed for USA: Here are the New Prices 2020)? Given the timing and current economic environment, the natural initial response from most of us was that of surprise. Chanel did admit to the increase, citing global price harmonization goals as the primary reason behind the significantly high price increases (read: Chanel Admits to Price Increases). We did a quick comparison of prices for the classic flap sizes across four different geographies – The US, Europe, Australia and India and arrived at the conclusion that this round of price increases have indeed resulted in Chanel prices equalizing all over the world!
Chanel Classic Flap Sizes | New US Prices (USD) | New EU Prices (EUR) | New Australia Prices (AUD) | New India Prices (INR) |
Classic Small Flap | $5,800 | €5,500 | A$9,820 | ₹4,62,000 |
Classic Medium Flap | $6,500 | €6,050 | A$10,800 | ₹5,08,200 |
Classic Jumbo Flap | $7,100 | €6,600 | A$11,780 | ₹5,54,400 |
Classic Maxi Flap | $7,700 | €7,100 | A$12,670 | ₹5,96,400 |

So what’s the upside? Simply, there’s no financial advantage to buying Chanel abroad during travels. What you’d pay there, is what you pay here without incurring travel expenses. If you were planning to treat yourself to a Chanel bag this year… you may as well just buy it at home (or wherever you usually shop). You also help your local stores and community.
