Meet the House of Goyard. Unlike other luxury fashion houses, you haven’t seen its flashy adverts and branded content on social media. However, Goyard has a reputation within fashion circles as one of the most well-respected and sought-after brands. Its world-renowned tote bags are considered the paragon of luxury totes.
Maintaining an air of mystery, Goyard does not advertise or sell its products online and is notorious for rarely speaking to the press. Even its points of purchase are limited. For example, according to the Goyard website, there are only seven places in the United States selling the brand. Moreover, the house doesn’t push new Goyard bag styles every season. Rather, it relies on the tried and true… at least until it decides to introduce a new model.
We’ve got everything you need to know about the House of Goyard and its legendary Goyard bags. First, we take a look at the Saint Louis, Anjou and Artois. Then, you get all of the details, including sizes and prices in the USA, UK and Europe. Enjoy!
Goyard's History and Brand Identity
Considered to many the ‘Holy Grail’ of tote bags, Goyard’s classic designs epitomize elegance and exclusivity within the luxury fashion industry. Although the House of Goyard was officially founded in 1853, its legacy dates back even further. Originally created as the House of Martin in 1792 by Pierre-François Martin, it specialized in box-making, trunk-making and packing. The company passed on to Martin’s successor, Louis-Henri Morel, and became the House of Morel. Eventually François Goyard, who had been employed as a teenage apprentice, took over and changed the name. Goyard ran the house for 32 years and during this time the brand expanded and hit new levels of success.
Goyard’s pieces have been worn by royalty and fashion royalty alike including Karl Lagerfeld and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. Meghan Markle, Selena Gomez and Kim Kardashian West’s daughter North West remain fans.

The Goyardine Canvas
The maison’s Goyardine canvas was created by François Goyard’s son Edmond in 1892. The now iconic design resembles piles of logs as a tribute to Goyard’s ancestors who were log drivers. Made of linen and cotton natural coated cloth, the canvas was revolutionary at the time as other trunk makers used only plain linen cloth. Following WWII, Goyard ceased making its special canvas until 1998. At that time, Goyard introduced colors other than black.
How the Goyardine canvas is made remains a secret to this day. In a rare interview with Hypebeast back in 2017, the House of Goyard explained, “Luxury is a dream and revealing too much of what goes on behind the scenes would spoil the magic.”

So to sum up our handbag math, there definitely are savings to be had when shopping abroad in Europe and the UK, particularly for the Saint Louis and Artois totes in the PM size. Overall, the bags are least expensive in Europe with potential savings up to 17%. The savings won’t justify the price of a plane ticket from the United States. On the other hand, those already planning a European trip may want to indulge at Goyard.
Are you tote-ally in for Goyard? Or do you prefer another brand? Will any of these be on your wish list? Let us know.
