In pure Oprah Winfrey style, Chanel says “You get a flap… and you get a flap…“ with its showing of handbags in the Cruise 2021/22 collection. For what it intends to be its last virtual show, filmed at a quarry in the southern part of France (specifically Carrieres de Lumieres in Les Baux-de-Provence), the collection, setting and photography played with light and dark, as well as black and white.
As for themes, think of the traditional chanel codes of black/white, tweed, interlaced leather/chains, bejeweled, and pearls, mixed with three “F”s: Fishnet, Fringe and Flaps. Together it reads both classic and modern, presumably head designer Virginie Viard’s intention.
The flaps on the runway came in all sizes. Micromini black flaps wrapped around waists and thighs.
Small and medium flaps appeared with gold hardware in black, black/white, tweed, and one pale peach. Whether plain or fancy, you have options, embellished or unadorned.
On the other hand, for those desiring something a bit different, there was fringe . . . adorning bags and clothing. Surprisingly, this punk rock idea meshed with quilted leather and chain!
Fans of vanity-type cases won’t be disappointed as the collection included round and boxy versions.
Lastly, the sole minaudiere was as classic as they come: quilted chanel leather embellished with gold chain.
So, are you in on the fringe? Or sticking with the flap? Of course, there’s always the issue of being able to get a flap, if the Spring/Summer 2021 collections are any indication.
