Ooh la la, another Chanel drop. This time it’s Chanel’s 22/23 Métier d’Art collection hitting boutiques and the website. Also known as the Dakar grouping, the colors and materials on the bags clearly are inspired by the site of its runway debut.
Deep rich hues and pop colors augment the traditional black, white, and pink, shown in leathers and fabrics. There are wood handles on some models; beading on others. Flap lovers can rejoice; there are many different styles from classic, to 2.55, to alternatives. The Chanel 22 returns and the Chanel 31 re-emerges.
Minis
Looking at the releases thus far, one sees that Chanel is sticking to the mini and small trend. At least half of the offerings are petite, some more so than others.
Classic Flaps
Let’s start with the mini flap styles, in the classic and 2.55 styles. For anyone who’s been searching for black rectangular minis, this is your season. Both the classic mini and the 2.55 mini are on tap. And there are plenty of other options as well.
In addition to the classic in black, there’s a patent version shaded in green, orange, and brown, consistent with the colors of the collection.

There are tweed classic minis as well. This one is in cotton and wool, in multicolored brown tones. It’s also shown in blue and white.

As is typical, the mini 2.55 comes in traditional aged calfskin. Shown here in yellow and olive green, it’s also available in dark pink and black.

As if that were not enough petite flap-styled handbags, there are more. Not quite classic (or 2.55), they still abide by the codes of Chanel. One for example, incorporates a wood Chanel “chain” with classic lambskin. It’s made in green and pink (both shown below) plus orange and yellow, and a multicolor fabric version.
Other mini bags stick to traditional metal straps, but vary in shape – a bit more north-south. Some in leather, some in fabric.

Chanel 22, 31, and a Messenger
Last season’s hot number is back . . . the Chanel mini 22. Using leather fashioned thru macrame there’s a metallic gold version as well as one in earthy browns, burgundy and black. If you really want to stand out, it’s also made in a combination of dark pink, dark green, and yellow. Should you prefer a more “basic” version, store drops include blue, yellow, pink, and burgundy.
And the Chanel 31 returns for the season, now in mini size. It’s offered in patent pink, white, burgundy, and yellow, all with black trim.
Or perhaps you’re on the hunt for a messenger style bag? There’s a half-moon shape in the mini size as well.

Not to be forgotten, there’s an updated version of a mini bowling bag. Like other handbags in the Dakar collection, this one includes a wood handle. It’s also available in olive green.
Truly, this is a season chockfull of miniature options.
Small and Medium Bags
Sometimes a tiny handbag just isn’t enough. Fortunately, there are plenty of small to medium bags available. Interestingly, the bags online are not classic or 2.55 styles. Not to worry though, from flaps to hobos, there are plenty of options.

Another small flap incorporates wood with the lambskin fabrication. This time, rather than a “chain” it’s a wood handle. The flap shows in both black and light blue.
Plus, the popular Chanel 19 will be on the shelves as well. Shown in bright yellow and baby blue, expect to see it in a multitude of colors.

Continuing the theme of hobo bags, Chanel offers different styles that are not the 22 (though the 22 appears in green). As you can see, one has a top clasp closure while the other is a zip top. And, in a similar vein, there are three backpacks thus far.

Big Might Be Better
Big bag lovers, you’re not forgotten. There’s a large flap with a top handle – kind of fancy and not really huge, but bigger than other bags. Plus two large shopping totes fill out the selection. One seems to be the Deauville. The other – and we may be dating ourselves – resembles Chanel’s former Westminster foldover convertible tote with pearls.

The Special and Uber Expensive
There’s an old saying that if you have to ask the price you can’t afford it. Well, in this case, when the price is only available upon request, you know it has to be expensive. Take a look at some of the special pieces created for this collection.
As you can see, one is a beaded classic mini flap, another is, well, interesting and indescribable. Alternatively, if looking for color, a wood beaded clutch in dark pink, purple, black, and beige might be for you. In addition, there is an evening bow bag, reminiscent of bags previously released by the brand years ago.

Lastly, it bears mentioning that all of the bags list for over $4,000. Indeed, the minis are the most affordable, most coming in just under $5,000. On the other hand, from what we see, there has not been a price increase on the black classic and 2.55 minis – they remain at $4,900. For now.
