Talk about a scene stealer. In this case it’s neither the adorable child actor nor the well-trained animal. Rather, it’s a Hermès handbag. When a Hermès Birkin or Kelly hits the silver screen, few fashionistas can look away. In some cases, the bag becomes part of the plot. In others, it is just a delightful distraction.
Below, some of our favorite Birkin and Kelly movie moments.
The Birkin Scene in "Sex and the City 2"
Who can forget the scene with Samantha and her Orange Birkin. In the movie, Samantha is leaving a counterfeit goods shop, when the shop owner mistakes her genuine Birkin for one of the fakes from his loot. The two engage in a tug of war of sorts, eventually resulting in the bag’s handle breaking and the bag landing on the ground. The bag’s embarrassing contents (including condoms) spill out at this point for all to see! Hilarious and tragic at the same time, the scene is nothing short of epic.

The ‘Bag-wati’ in "Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara”
This one is Bollywood, rather than Hollywood, and equally enjoyable. If you haven’t seen it, this film centers around the adventures of three blokes travelling through Spain on a bachelor’s trip. One of the earliest scenes in the movie shows the boys driving in a convertible with an exotic Kelly bag in the back seat. The bag is supposed to be a gift from the groom for his high maintenance fiancée. The conversation naturally focuses on the price of the bag and how rare it is. The boys jokingly nickname the bag ‘bag-wati’ (which humorously makes it revered) and dress it up with a hat and sunglasses! Even today, many in India refer to Hermès Birkins and Kellys as ‘Bagwati’!

Margot’s Birkin in “The Royal Tenenbaums”
Margot, played by Gwyneth Paltrow in this classic Wes Anderson flick, goes down as one of the most memorable characters in Hollywood history. Her fashion sense was contradictory in every way. From the striped polo dresses hidden under a luxurious Fendi Fur Coat, to the preppy barrette hairclips alongside heavy black eyeliner, the character was aptly depicted as moody and mysterious. Spotted with a Birkin Bag in several scenes, the bag hinted at Margot’s wealthy background. A fashion feast for the eyes, we enjoyed re-watching this classic!

Red Crocodile Kelly in “Le Divorce”
If there ever was a movie where a bag played a pivotal part in the plot line, it’s this one. Those of you who have seen the movie will understand the relevance of the bag in the story. The precious red crocodile Kelly is a gift from Edgar Cosset, played by Thierry Lhermitte, to his mistress Isabel, played by Kate Hudson. At first, the bag signifies the acknowledgement and acceptance by Isabel of the complicated and secret relationship. Later in the movie, the moment when Edgar’s wife sees the Kelly bag, is when she realizes that her husband is having an affair with Isabel. The bag definitely gets its fair share of importance in this film.

The Orange Birkin from “The Proposal”
One of the sweetest rom coms that we are guilty of repeat-watching is “The Proposal”. Starring Ryan Reynolds (Andrew) and Sandra Bullock (Margaret), it’s the story of two colleagues brought together by unexpected circumstances. Margaret, a big city editor, lands up on a small Alaskan island to meet Andrew’s family. Her Louis Vuitton luggage and Orange Birkin draw attention to how out of place she is on the serene island. Though a predictable plot, it has its heart warming moments, and of course, the actors’ and Margaret’s wardrobe are a treat for the eyes!

The Famous Caramel Birkin in “Blue Jasmine”
Cate Blanchett won an academy award for her role as Jasmine in this 2003 classic by Woody Allen. Jasmine is a Manhattan socialite who falls on hard times and needs to move in with her working class sister in San Francisco. Despite her heavy debts, in one scene Jasmine flies first class sporting a Chanel jacket with a caramel Birkin in tow. Shown repeated in the movie, the Birkin plays a pivotal part in illustrating Jasmine’s reluctance to embrace her financial situation.
