Chanel began with price increase announcements in Europe on the 11th of May. (Read:Chanel Admits to Price Increase: Here are the New Prices 2020). News of price hikes in the United States that would come into effect on 25th May quickly followed. (Read:Chanel Price Increase Confirmed for USA: Here are the New Prices 2020). We now have confirmation of similar price increases taking place in several other parts of the world as well.
The table below highlights the latest change in Chanel’s prices in Australia for some of the popular styles:

Similar to Europe and the United States, the Australian price increases are higher for Classics and Minis than other styles. The Classic Small Flap Bag is up 27% and the Mini Square Flap Bag is up a whopping 31% in Australia! Other styles like the Medium Boy Bag and the Classic Wallet on Chain see a 10 and 14 percent increase respectively.
All of this makes perfect sense for a brand that has admitted to price harmonization being a primary objective behind all of these recent pricing decisions. With prices going up significantly in Europe and the U.S., areas with lower prices (pre-increase) should expect commensurate increases.
It is interesting to note that Chanel has maintained a 5 – 7 percent pricing differential between Europe and Australia and continues to do so. While this difference is in the 1 – 5 percent range between Europe and the United States, a slightly greater differential between Europe and the rest of the world is normal and expected.

With this price equalization, Chanel continues to eliminate any price advantage to purchasing a handbag when traveling. Given current restricted travel opportunities, the timing of this move couldn’t have been better for Chanel.
