The question remains: Should I invest in Hermes for my first neutral or should I start off with a less expensive bag like I mentioned in the post, such as the Givenchy Antigona or Saint Laurent Style?

Hermes all the way! I love Gris Mouette for current/new season. Otherwise my favorite neutral is Craie. Gris Tourterelle is also really nice.
