Hi Bianca, if Chanel is your favorite, then definitely go for it. It’s a classic and you’ll probably use it and love it for years to come.
I got a Dior saddle a year ago and I thought I would love it just as much, but it certainly didn’t grow on me like how my classic Chanel flap did. Remember, the saddle bag went out of fashion (and production) in the early 2000s, so the saddle could be that seasonal again.
I had the same concerns as you in 2012/2013. I was deciding between a Chanel jumbo flap and other brands. Ended up getting a Dior and Celine for the same price but guess what, I didn’t use these 2 bags as much as I would have liked. And after all these years, I’m still hankering after the jumbo classic flap. Pinching myself for not biting the bullet in 2012 when it still cost about £3000 ish for the jumbo. It’s nearly the end of 2019 now and I have recently purchased the jumbo (yes, in spite of the numerous price increases).
Another tip you may wish to consider. There are several companies that offer a subscription based service where you can ‘rent’ the bags for a period of time. Why not try that out for a month? If you realize that you really can’t live without the Chanel, then go for it! :)

Bianca – follow your heart. If what you really want is a Chanel classic flap bag, then get that. You likely won’t be satisfied even if you purchase 10 other bags and will keep eyeing the Chanel. At least, that’s been my experience.
Yes, the price for Chanel bags keeps rising. It’s hard to imagine the price declining in the future, but the rate of increase (which has been fairly aggressive as of late) could slow. My first flap – around 15 years ago – cost $1200 or so. That same bag is now nearing $6K. For people saving up for the Chanel flap, the financial goalpost keeps moving.
You might not rule out, however, purchasing one in the secondary market. Although Chanel bags hold value (though not nearly as well as the Hermès B/K/C trifecta), there are deals to be found. Just make sure you use someone reputable and have it authenticated. There are a lot of good fakes out there.
Hope that helps. Keep us posted on what you decide. Best, m

And now it’s official – LVMH to buy Tiffany’s for $16.2 billion. LVMH is paying in cash and the deal is expected to close in mid 2020. Does this affect your perception of Tiffany’s or LVMH? Are you more or less likely to buy at Tiffany’s?

Hello,
Do you know if Vancouver will have any sale this year?

I went to the Hermes VIP Private Sale today and total time from waiting in queue to checking out was under two hours. I managed to sneak a couple of pictures inside but security quickly glimpsed over and shooed my phone away.
Accessories were 50% off and are limited to a total of 3 units (1 per category) this includes leathers (Rivales, Hapis), assorted enamels, Clic Clacs (mainly pinks and blues).
Shoes are 50% off. No Orans. Jump boots in “Moka”.
Cashmere and silks were 50% off w limits of 2 cashmeres, 4 silks.
RTW is 60% off but I’ve heard previous sales discounted at a steep 80% in this category.
Ties and pocket squares were 50% w limits of 4 ties, 2 silks
I also saw gloves, hats, heavy cashmere scarves. No belts or houseware.

Seriously, given how despised Trump is in both the US and around the world, you have to wonder who’s idea it was to have him there. The PR people really didn’t do their job here.

Ghesquiere has a right to his opinion. In the US of A one of our basic rights is the right to free speech. He can criticize if he wants. Whether his boss or LV reprimand him is up to them and their corporate policies.

It’s shameful of them to move into our country and speak negatively of our President! You don’t go to someone’s house as a guest and criticize the host!!

Just LOVE a Chanel bag with a top handle!

I find this so odd on multiple levels:
1. LVMH owns so many fashion brands so I don’t think anyone would really boycott
2. They didn’t say they support Trump, he just visited the factory, which brings me to 3…
3. Why would Trump go to a ribbon cutting ceremony for non-US company, a factory that will only employ 150 at it’s start? This seems like something that the mayor of Dallas should do.
4. With everything going on in the world today, why did Trump feel it was necessary to visit this factory? I understand the point of view from LVMH the prestige of having a sitting US president visit your factory is still an honor, even if the president in question is as divisive as Trump.
5. If you’ve seen his supporters at his rallies, they don’t seem like the typical LV customer.
I could go on and on about this, but I need to get back to my life. I’m not a fan of Trump, but I am a fan of LV. I’m not angry at LV, just confused by this and maybe a bit disappointed.

Yes, too much of a copycat and with pickpockets everywhere why dare carry an open non-flap or zip closed bag??
I have even started carrying my Birkins “closed” after the train station police grabbed a pickpocket and saved me from a walletless lunch!
But designers should be more creative! Change up the hardware at the very least!

Many of you know that I am 4th generation Hermes client and I am French. I have become increasingly unhappy not only with the service in the boutiques but with the QUALITY of Hermes products. I have doubts that anything being produced now or in the future will last long enough to pass down to my grown daughters or my darling grand daughters.
While at FSH a customer actually grabbed my 25 year old Kelly to take to a sales person to buy but my Birkin from 2015 has already been to spa twice and looks old and worn out. Plus the fact I still have my mother and grandmother exotic skin bags with spa and decent storage will be handed down by me.
I think with each new factory, Hermes overstretches both its internal production capacity and QUALITY CONTROL as well as overstretching the production and tanneries responsible for their leathers. I worked for many years in haute couture so I know this is a problem with other brands too and I definitely know every type of QC challenge. And I only buy from the Hermes boutiques so none of my bags can be questioned as replicas!!
Interesting enough is that my belts and those of my two daughters still seem to be the same high standard as in the 1950s and 1960s but the small leather goods and the gloves have both gone down in quality—-stitching and long lasting. Silk scarves seem to have maintained the quality. But try asking some of the younger sales staff for a plisse scarf and see if they know what you want! Cashmere quality is facing the same problems that every cashmere garment or scarf is facing world wide attempts at over production starting at the level of free range animals to stressed out animals.
So my reaction is definitely NEGATIVE FOR SEVERAL REASONS:
1. SUPPLY AND DEMAND vertically from tanneries through Hermes owned factories—you note that I know say FACTORIES and NOT ateliers!!
2. Too much pandering to the new customers who have no sense of the history nor issues of quality and only want a status symbol to keep up with the Jones or Chans or Kardasians.
3. Too many NEW styles being introduced as if the brand is competing with designer handbags and leather goods like Bottega or Calvin Klein for “IT” bag status with every season.
4. I still have not forgotten how poorly long time clients were treated by boutique managers when we questioned the strange odor of urine wafting from our Hermes handbags. Blame the client is NOT GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE OR RELATIONS!
5. Why should I pay euros 10,000 for a real Hermes when walking towards me are at least 3 replica handbags that look as good as the real Hermes and cost less than 1/3 the price? Even the sales receipts and the boxes are now easily copied. On this the most copied styles are the Birkin and the Kelly but now the Evelyne and the Garden Party and even the Constance are everywhere too.
And moving leather factories into French villages does not help the local environment at all! And for most of these villages it is way too little and too late to keep the young people in town and away from moving to major city centers.
So I seem to have rained on your parade about this announcement. Ask yourself how quickly artisans can be trained to highest level of required skills? Ask yourself how quickly QC persons can be trained to inspect? How quickly the pieces, threads, etc that hold you leathers together can be hand made instead of using injection molding or industrial methods?
And when does a coveted luxury artisan made leather product become and industrial product with fewer stitches per centimeter?
All that said above, I am happy with my newly delivered Halzan but still find the soles of the shoes and sandals impossibly hard to be comfortable. The jewelry is beautiful as are the home decor textiles but then these are not what the new customers stand in line for.
- Sara S. S. Florent replied 5 years ago
Thats b/c of the QC production lines! If the items don’t pass QC they are thrown away.
Kering is notorious for this, especially with Gucci! They claim to be a sustainable company but the swill is out of control. As for LVMH & Richemont Im pretty sure they’re under the same protocols.

I went to the NJ sale yesterday (Thursday). I lined up at 7:30 am and there already were about 200 people ahead of me in the parking lot. Security was well represented and in charge. Doors to mall opened at 8:30 am. We were funneled through a roped off area, then sent up the escalator, then roped off into small groups of 20. Doors to sale opened at 10 am, and they sent a large group in (space is large.) By about 10:45 am I was in the doors, but like Disneyland, we were held in another roped off area. At 11 am I was in the sale (total wait time – 3.5 hours.)
Did not feel rushed or crowded. Lots of staff available, and very nice. Responses varied from some willing to go in the back to look for a size vs. those who say “what is out is it.” You can see behind the curtained area that there were many orange boxes available so I’m sure they re-stock daily.
Discounts of 50-60% off. No bags or jewelry (fashion or fine.) There was Ready to Wear for Men and Women, Shoes for men and women. Housewares (trays, pillows, blankets,) women’s bathing suits and sweaters, pareos, scarves, beach bags, men’s ties. As expected, women’s shoes and scarves had a lot of activity. Men’s and women’s ready to wear didn’t have crowds. Women’s RTW seemed mostly smaller sizes – 38/40 vs. 42/44.
Shoes were arranged by size. Boots were along a wall and you had to look at the photo and search with intent for your size. Lots of size 38. I’m a size 40 boots and pickings were slim, although I did find the pair below (originally $2300, 50% off.)
There were a few sneaker options available including a style I saw two years ago at the Paris store. Most boot styles were from last year. Didn’t see too many classics, but as you can tell from my selection, I prefer an edgier style.
Ties for hubby were $97.
Heard that the VIP sale on Wednesday had a lighter response than was expected. Also heard that the retail store in Short Hill will move into this brighter, airier space for the holiday season, allowing them to stock more merchandise.

Wjenga summed it up nicely! Another thing I noticed was very few Oran sandals for sizes 7-7.5. I’ll attempt to post a pic of my haul!

VIP day (today) was very calm and well organized. Invites were given by email with the time you were allowed in. Just needed to show your ID. No time restrictions on this day (I spent an hour at the sale). Not crowded at all today.
Lots of inventory on silks, cashmere shawls and mufflers (designs from 2-3 seasons ago). Designs included la Mer Au ciel, peuple du vent, Tyger Tyger, clic clac a pois and Collection Imperials (plenty of cws). Lots of shoes, boots and booties. Plenty of the common sizes too (6.5 to 8). Neo boots, riding boots, please and joueuse boots caught my eyes. Surprised to see a decent selection of neutral shoes/boots (not just seasonal colors). Racks of RTW (Shirts, coats, dresses, skirts), wall of hats, and plenty of swimwear and beach accessories. Blankets and pillows too but no Avalons. A small section for baby as well (pillows, hats, toys). No jewelry at this sale. Most items at 50% off except RTW which was at 60% off.
Some logistics – no food or shopping bags allowed in. You don’t have to check in your bags. You can keep you phones with you but no photos. Staff are super friendly and helpful!!

No numbers and shoppers can’t cue until 9 am. This should be mayhem.
