In September 2020, Gucci’s media handles posted mysterious trailers, hinting towards the mega fashion house’s collaboration with performance gear giant, North face. The last week of 2020 saw the launch of this massive and much awaited alliance.
Echoing a 70’s vibe, the collection features menswear, womenswear, a series of bags and backpacks as well as recreational instruments like tents, and even sleeping bags! All the elements resonate Gucci’s panache for maximalism and imbibes North Face’s expertise in outdoor gear.
The logo that’s lavishly splashed all over the range of luxury sports wear, features North Face’s iconic quarter circle as a homage to the granite Half Dome in Yosemite National Park as well as the famous green and red Gucci stripes. The vivid floral prints used on the skirts and coordinated sets are specially designed for this collection.
The materials used to create the pieces for the collection evoke both the brands’ policies on sustainability. Owing to the growing need to reduce the carbon footprint of the fashion industry in the world, the accessories are reportedly made of ECONYL, a nylon fabric made from recycled material.
This is Gucci’s first collaboration under creative director Alessandro Michele, who has previously showcased his love for sustainability in the “Off the Grid” collection of the brand, launched last year, which too was created using regenerated materials. Given the brands focus on sustainability and initiatives like the shift towards releasing bi-annual season-less collections and a focus on reducing carbon footprint, the partnership with North Face makes sense.
