If you can make it to Paris or London in the next couple of months (and, oh how we wish we could), two new exhibits should catch your attention.
The first, “Gabrielle Chanel. A Fashion Manifesto” at Palais Galliera in Paris, studies Coco Chanel’s fashion work through her career. While, of course, reviewing the classic Chanel codes like tweed suits and quilted handbags, the exhibit is said to include lesser known themes. Moreover, unlike the prior 2005 retrospective at NYC’s Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, this collection is pure Coco – without looking at Karl Lagerfeld’s more contemporary expansion of Chanel’s codes. The show is sponsored by Chanel and opens October 1.

The second exhibition is in London and focuses on the PurseBop first love – handbags. At the Victoria & Albert Museum, titled “Bags: Inside Out,” the show examines our fascination with this favored accessory. From the original Jane Birkin Birkin to Mulberry bags owned by Kate Moss and Alexa Chung, to Chanel and more, 300 or so handbags will be on display along with a look at production and ateliers. It opens November 21.
