An article in dutchnews.nl reports that Dutch prosecutors are auctioning (through a third party auction house) Hermès, Chanel and Louis Vuitton handbag and other fashion items confiscated from convicts. it’s an effort to monetize ill-gotten gains. Auctions of cars and boats seized from criminals or for tax liens is a well-established practice, but venturing into luxury accessories is new.
A spokesperson is quoted in the article explaining that the idea evolved after detectives seized a moped worth maybe €2,000, but ignored the very expensive Birkin.
