In a world where sports watches often exude masculinity, Hermès is shaking up the game with a timepiece designed with the modern woman in mind. Meet the Hermès Cut, the latest sensation unveiled at the Watches and Wonders show in Geneva, marking the brand’s most significant women’s watch line launch in over a decade.
Hermès is leveraging the success of its debut timepiece, the H08, introduced to the market in 2021. Designed by Philippe Delhotal, creative director of Hermès’ watch division, the H08 features a distinctive circular face paired with an almost square case – a design that’s become synonymous with the brand.
While initially tailored for men, Laurent Dordet, chief executive of Hermès Horloger, reports that approximately 20% of H08 buyers are women. However, until now, there has not been a notable gap in Hermès’ timepiece offerings specifically for women. “We definitely wanted to propose a smaller-diameter watch on the same functional segment [to the H08]… to appeal to this segment of feminine clientele seeking such timepieces,” he explains.
Move over Rolex and Chanel, as Hermès is stepping into the arena with the Cut, a timepiece that seamlessly blends functionality with undeniable elegance. Delhotal, the creative mind behind the Cut, has once again employed his mastery of geometry, crafting what Hermès describes as:
“A circle. A round shape. Hermès Cut plays with the vocabulary of geometry. Sharp angles and crisply drawn lines endow this universally appealing watch with a distinctive identity. The balanced proportions of the satin-brushed and polished case and the gleam of its clean-cut edges accentuate its character.”
Breaking conventions, Hermès takes a different approach by repositioning the crown between 1 and 2 o’clock, adorned with a lacquered or engraved H. Coming in at 36mm, the Cut’s proportions are generous but not to the extent that it feels too bulky for the wrist. With four designs to choose from, including steel or two-tone steel and rose gold, each featuring the option of a bezel adorned with 56 natural diamonds, the Cut is set to make a bold statement in the world of women’s watches.
Customizing is easy, as the Cut line-up presents a diverse range of rubber strap options. Offering a selection of eight colors from the Hermès palette, including white, orange, gris perle, gris étain, glycine, vert criquet, bleu jean, and capucine, wearers can effortlessly match their preferred Hermès style. The interchangeable rubber straps are available for $250.
Prices for the Hermès Cut start at $6,725, (steel, no diamonds) and up to $21,900 for a diamond-set bezel.
What are your thoughts on this new Hermès timepiece? Do you still love the H08, or do you prefer the new Cut?
