Would You Rent Your Designer Handbags?

In the past, we’ve often dabbled with the thought of turning our prized possessions, luxury handbags, into perhaps a more lucrative endeavour. We all frequently hear about how certain brands carry stellar investment value alongside timeless style, but what if you could do more? What if you were able to make money off your precious Hermès and Chanel items? Could you? Would you? Well, one woman has, and she has quite the tale to tell.

Princess Dior has detailed how she turned her love for designer handbags into legitimate career. How? By renting out her designer handbags to anyone and everyone. In doing so, Dior has been able to pocket anywhere between $5,000 to $10,000. Not too shabby, huh?  

What initially started off as simply lending a Christian Dior handbag to a close friend (who offered, and did, pay Princess to do so) that entrepreneurial spirit we so admire took off.

“They paid me to use my Dior bag for a video shoot. It was my homegirl so I would’ve given it to her, but she paid me for it. She gave me $200… so, I was sitting down [thinking] like ‘Dang, she just gave me $200’… I got like five Dior bags, six Louis [Vuittons], a whole bunch of Gucci bags and clothes that I’ve only worn one time… so, I was like, ‘Okay, I’m gonna make a business out of this.”

  Having since built a sizeable clientele, Princess has even ventured into the sourcing business as well. Using her connections to her advantage, the business savvy fashion lover was able to track down a rare Hermès Birkin. “A friend of a friend asked if I had an exclusive Hermès bag, and so I told her I didn’t have it, but I would go find it,” she says. “After using a photo shared by the woman to locate the bag, Princess soon found herself making $5,000 a day just by loaning the designer bag out to the woman,” reports afrotech.com member Shanique Yates.

This is not the first time such a concept has taken flight. With websites like RentTheRunway.com and others, having gained in popularity in recent times. Are shoppers more inclined to learn towards “short term rentals” over long term investments as a result of staggering price increases? Or maybe the commitment to a style as trends come and go has diminished, as luxe lovers seek to snag the latest and greatest each season.
