Move over denim, Y2K, and east-west trendiness. I’m going for burgundy, in both my wine and my bags. This wine-y hue dominated the streets and runways of Paris this spring. Signaling that burgundy is back in full force, and it’s chicer than ever.

From oversized clutches to dainty crossbody companions, burgundy makeovers were everywhere. Bag styles in box calfskin, woven leather, and patent exude richness in sophisticated shades of deep cherry, Bordeaux, and Merlot. And let’s talk about versatility. Burgundy blends seamlessly with everything, from other shades of red to black, and neutrals, elevating even the most casual of outfits.
My first foray into the burgundy trend was the Goyard Sénat Pouch, and it’s become my go-to for elevating all-black looks. But now, I’m ready to take it a step further and explore more burgundy options.
I’ve rounded up my top picks for 2024, and I need your help to make the final call. Stick around, check out the options, and be sure to cast your vote in the poll.
Alaïa
A trendsetter again in recent years, Alaïa is feeding frenzies with its edgy mesh ballet flats and its understated Le Teckel bag.

Le Cœur
The brand’s best-selling Le Cœur bag has captured hearts, mine included. Exuding a simple heart form, this minimalist calfskin leather bag stands apart from Chanel’s bold heart bag and LV’s offerings. While Alaïa’s bright red version is certainly eye-catching, the deep red shade is less showy but still makes my heart race.

Chic, timeless, and understated, the bag is devoid of any flashy design features, with just a small and subtle Alaïa heat stamp on the front.
Measuring 21 x 17 x 5 cm (8.2 x 6.6 x 1.9 inches) and featuring a zip closure, its sleek profile means it’s not the roomiest of bags, but it makes up for that with its chic design. Complete with a delicate adjustable leather shoulder strap, the Le Cœur can be worn in various ways.
Alaïa’s Le Cœur is available in a deep red shade, alongside classic black and white, and retails for €990 (£880/$1,290).
Loewe
Loewe is a brand that consistently hits the mark with its quiet luxury designs. Now, with its dark burgundy shade offered across a range of coveted bags, it’s becoming increasingly irresistible, with a couple of styles catching my eye.

Mini Pebble Bucket Bag
Introduced in the brand’s Spring/Summer 2024 collection, the Pebble Bucket Bag emerges as a contemporary icon.

Crafted in mellow calfskin, the Pebble Bucket is characterized by a distinctive twisted construction and minimalist silhouette. Offered in medium and mini sizes, the petite mini version measures 19.5 x 16 x 16 cm (7.7 x 6.3 x 6.3 inches) and still packs a punch.
The strap can be adjusted thanks to its decorative and functional Loewe Anagram-engraved Pebble hardware. Additionally, for fans of crossbody wear, the bag comes with a removable strap. Finished with a magnetic fastening and internal pocket, Loewe’s Mini Pebble Bucket Bag retails for €1,800 (£1,650/$2,400).
Flamenco Clutch Bag
Another Loewe offering on my radar is the Mini Flamenco. An iconic design from the 1980s, the Flamenco has a minimalist design void of any hardware. Distinguished by its cinched-in design and signature coiled knots, the Mini Flamenco is constructed in supple Nappa calfskin.
The new Flamenco Purse design elevates the original with the addition of Loewe’s signature donut chain. The bag measures a fairly generous 20 x 30 x 10.5 cm (7.9 x 11.8 x 4.1 inches), the beauty of the Flamenco lineup lies in its versatility. The bag can be worn as a clutch or with its duo of detachable shoulder straps for an effortless everyday crossbody look.
The Flamenco Purse retails for €2,800 (£2,550/$3,650) and is also available in dark burgundy.
Bottega Veneta
Much like Loewe, Bottega Veneta steals the show with its colorways season after season. My eyes are particularly drawn to the Cherry shade—a little lighter in hue than other burgundy tones in this lineup, making it an all-year bag.
Bang Bang Vanity Case
Bottega Veneta recently entered the vanity case arena with the stylish Bang Bang Vanity. Comparable to Loro Piana’s iconic Extra Pocket Pouch, this vanity case showcases a minimal silhouette, enhanced by Bottega’s iconic Intrecciato weave.

Assembled from Bottega’s premium calfskin leather with gold-tone hardware, the Bang Bang Vanity Case is high on the wish list – particularly in the Cherry red shade. This sophisticated mini retails for €1,950 (£1,750/$2,400).
Saint Laurent
Known for its sleek black handbags, Saint Laurent has expanded its offerings to reflect current trends, including the glossy dark red wine shade.

Crafted in burgundy calf leather, the elongated bag measures 7 x 14 x 29 cm (2.7 x 5.5 x 11.4 inches), with plenty of room for everyday essentials. What’s more, the bag boasts an accordion-style gusset for an even roomier interior.
Complete with an adjustable strap that can be worn on the shoulder or removed entirely for a clutch bag look, Neous’ Phoenix Baguette offers plenty of versatility. Secured with a discreet magnetic fastening underneath the brand’s signature egg gold-tone hardware, it exudes an “if you know, you know” design.
