It’s the height of summer – with heat waves around the world – but already Chanel is turning its sights to the fall season. Or more accurately, it is properly referred to as Pre Fall/Winter 2023/24. The collection dropped in boutiques and online this week, giving a glimpse of what’s to come. And when it comes to handbags, expect decorative chains, mostly in gold; quilting variations; and matching ensembles particularly in tweed.

Flaps
Classic Flap
The largest selection of bags, at least online, is the flap style. Not necessarily, the iconic Classic though. Of course, there are those too. The black with black chain (aka So-Black) flap appears with “price upon request” – never a good sign lol. However, a bold pink tweed version keeps the price just under $10K. And, of course, there will be assorted leather colors as always.

Non-Classic Options
But with the price of the medium Classic leather flap hitting five figures this year, at least Chanel is giving us some options at a lower price point. One of those is for boy-lovers. Fans missing the style will be happy to see the return of the Boy bag.

Beyond the Classic and the Boy, Chanel offers a myriad of flap styles. Take your pick on shape – directionally north-south or east-west. Opt for nearly any size – mini, small, and medium – in leather or tweed. The common denominator though is the chains. Whether interlaced with leather or naked, you cannot miss this classic Chanel code! While there’s a classic leather mini on the menu, you’ll also find other leather styles in petite and larger sizes.

Perhaps you prefer tweed? You’re in luck. With the theme of coordinating bags to ensembles – a classic Chanel motif – you have fabric options as well as leather.

Hobos and the Chanel 22
It’s not all about the flap bag though. Chanel’s got you covered in the upcoming season with hobos. Yes, the mini Chanel 22 that captured the hearts of many is back, but there are also a number of other bags with this casual vibe.

Let’s start though with the Chanel 22. Last year’s sleeper that turned into a hit when shrunk to mini size, is back in all different sizes. And there’s sheepskin too.
In addition, this is where you see the quilting variation referred to above. The regular size 22 in black is treated to an upgrade with gold quilting. And yes, it comes at a cost. This bag retails at $8600, compared to the approximately $5000 price of the original version. We wouldn’t be surprised to see a mini version of this decorated style either… The pearl embellished mini 22 remains in demand and hard to get.

Other Hobo Styles
When it comes to hobos, though, Chanel has a few more of these shoulder bags. Most price around the $5k mark. The exception is the black maxi hobo with front pocket. It’s a bit more.

Backpacks
Although fall is back-to-school time… these probably aren’t Chanel backpacks for your students. Measuring 7″x7″ not many books will fit inside. In black and red, with shiny gold hardware, it’s a chic way to be casual for the season.

Evening Bags
Evening bags are where Chanel really shines this upcoming season. Or, perhaps we should say it sparkles. In this instance, the offerings glitter… in small and mini sizes, primarily with embellished tweeds. On the other hand, if you’re looking for a true minaudière, none seem to be available yet.
