Dear PurseBop:
I just got offered a mini Kelly tricolor bag from my home store with a date stamp from 2 years ago. How can that be? Does this mean no one wanted this bag? Have you experienced this or is it normal that the bag was produced a couple of years ago?
Dear Bag with An Older Date Stamp:
It’s actually not uncommon for Hermès to offer bags that were produced in previous years, including bags that were manufactured in the previous year or even earlier. The U stamp you mentioned indicates that the bag was produced in 2022, and it’s possible that this specific Mini Kelly tricolor was either a slower-moving style or was reserved in their inventory for a client that never arrived or did not purchase the bag.
- Hermès produces bags in limited quantities, and sometimes bags can sit in inventory for a while before being offered to customers, even if they were produced in a previous year. This is especially true for bags like the Mini Kelly, which are highly coveted but might not always be immediately snapped up by clients.
- The fact that it’s a 2022 bag doesn’t necessarily mean that nobody wanted it. Hermès bags can sometimes sit in stock for a variety of reasons — perhaps it wasn’t the right timing for the right customer, or maybe it wasn’t in the most popular color or combination at the time. Hermès is known for its exclusivity, and some customers wait for the exact combination they want, which can lead to bags being available later than their production date.
- It’s also worth noting that Hermès frequently rotates its inventory. Even bags from previous years can be offered to customers when they are made available through the store’s internal rotation process or based on demand and availability at the time.
- While it may seem like a “leftover,” it’s not necessarily a negative thing. Hermès bags are known for holding their value, and each piece has its own life cycle in the store. If the Mini Kelly tricolor is still available, it might just be that it hasn’t found the right customer or that the store was holding it for a specific clients.
- If the bag is being offered to you, and you like it, there’s no reason to worry about the production year. It’s a valid piece, and it’s a great opportunity to get your hands on a highly coveted design.
In short, it’s completely normal for a Hermès bag to be produced in a previous year and still be offered to a customer later. It doesn’t necessarily mean it was unwanted; it’s just part of the way Hermès manages its inventory. It could be a great opportunity for you if the bag is something you love!
