Dear PurseBop:

I’m not sure if this is a strange question but I am somewhat overweight and I often wonder if Hermès staff take these types of issues into account because they want their products to look good on people, especially in places like Paris. In fact I haven’t been in any Hermes stores where staff are a bit overweight. Seeking your wisdom and knowledge – always.

Dear Body Image Concerns:

Concerns about body image and how luxury brands perceive and treat their customers are common. Luxury brands like Hermès, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Dior, Celine, and others are known for their high standards in both product quality and customer service.

Hermès is not only known for its ready to wear, but its accessories as well such as bags, shoes, scarves, and homeware is really where they shine. Their leather bags are offered in many sizes from mini bags to medium size bags and continuing up to much larger bags in all styles, both quota and non quota bags.

Many boutiques offer the option to try on their bags in various sizes to determine which one suits their taste and lifestyle. The size of one’s handbag does not correlate with the size of one’s body. Anyone can carry a mini Kelly or a Birkin 35 and everything in between. It is just a matter of trying them on for size and aesthetic.

Luxury professionals are trained to treat all customers with respect and to assist them in finding products that suit their needs and preferences.

Most luxury brands offer a wide range of sizes but do not always have in stock multiple pieces of all sizes. They are always willing to order items from other locations to fulfill a size requirement. In addition, luxury brands often offer bespoke or custom-made options. This allows them to cater to a wider variety of body types, ensuring that customers can have pieces tailored to fit them perfectly.

It is true that staff in high-end stores, especially in fashion capitals like Paris, often adhere to strict dress codes and grooming standards.

The fashion industry is slowly but increasingly embracing diversity in body types. Many luxury brands are beginning to recognize the importance of inclusivity, which may influence diverse hiring practices and customer service approaches over time.

Your experience in Hermès stores can vary depending on location and individual staff members. If you ever feel uncomfortable or unwelcome, it’s worth addressing this directly with the store manager or through customer service channels.

Remember, luxury shopping should be an enjoyable experience. If you ever feel out of place, it might be worth trying another location or speaking directly with a staff member about your needs.
