Dear Pursebop,
Does Hermès really discriminate style-wise? An influencer I won’t name but who is fairly new to Hermès told me that I’ll never be able to score anything in a shop (not even a non-quota bag) or to build any relationship with a SA because I have tattoos and I lean towards a full black/chic goth style. Do you happen to have any feedback on this? I was really hoping for a Herbag on my next trip to Paris.
Thank you!
Dear Worried About Discrimination:
In our experience Hermès does not discriminate against anyone. The fact that an influencer would say this to you is quite surprising and outrageous.
As we have repeatedly written about, showing your knowledge and love for the brand is what Hermès likes to see. A person who is truly passionate about the brand is likely to be offered a bag from Hermès both in Paris and in all other locations. Appearance and personal style is not the issue at all.
Hermès SA’s in Paris and all locations are experienced at determining if a customer is shopping for themselves or merely to resell the items. Resellers are not welcome, but anyone with a true passion for the brand is welcome.
Our recommendation is to educate yourself about the brand’s products, different types of leathers, colors, styles, and hardware. Purchase items in the store you will use and enjoy. Request the bag you desire and be specific about the color and size, if you have a preference. Show your appreciation and love for the brand and your dream bag will come.
Best of luck and happy shopping.
