Dear PurseBop:
Has the Hermes pre-spend requirement increased from the original 1:1 belief?
Dear Pre-Spend Requirement:
Hermès has never stated, and likely will never admit, there is a set amount a client must spend before being offered a quota bag such as a Birkin or Kelly. And we have reports from community members that they were offered a Birkin or Kelly without spending any money in the boutique.
However, based on the experiences reported by many Hermès lovers, a SA could not offer a quota bag unless a significant amount of money had been spent within the boutique. It is a widely held assumption that if you spend the equivalent of the retail cost of a Kelly or Birkin on items within the boutique with one Sales Associate (SA), you would most likely be offered a quota bag at that time or in the future.
As we have experienced, things change at Hermès often and clients are not always alerted to the changes. It does appear that since the Pandemic and the vast increase in the demand for all things Hermès, including quota bags, and the continuing low inventory, clients are reporting that they are spending significantly more than than 1:1. Many clients report spending 2:1, 3:1, and even 4:1 and still may or may not be offered a quota bag.
There are many reasons for this phenomenon.
The increase in clientele, and therefore competition, at the boutiques.
The notoriously low quota bag inventory;
The increased desire for smaller size bags.
For instance, many people desire a mini Kelly or a Birkin 25/Kelly 25. There is a much higher demand for this particular size, and for certain neutral colors such as gold, black, and craie.
Clients are more specific with their wishlist. As their collection grows, their wishlist gets narrower and they are not as willing to accept any quota bag offer.
Our best advice is to stay in touch with your SA, maintain a good relationship, keep your wishlist updated, and enjoy shopping throughout the many different metiers (departments) within the boutique.
Good luck and Happy Shopping.
