How Do I Ask for a Birkin or Kelly in a Hermès Store in Europe (other than Paris)?

Dear PurseBop:

I am going to Europe (Paris, Monte Carlo, Florence, and Rome) next month and would love to purchase a Birkin or Kelly. I know the Paris stores use a lottery for appointments, but is there any harm in walking into the stores in the other cities and simply telling the SA that I am looking to purchase a Birkin or Kelly and am willing to purchase other items, as well? I do not have a boutique in my city and, therefore, no SA relationship. And I do not want to beat around the bush since I don’t have time to slowly develop a relationship with an SA in Europe given that I’m only in each city for a few days. Will I be laughed out of the store, or is it worth a shot to be direct?

Dear No Home Store:

It sounds like a fabulous trip to Europe. Definitely try the lottery system while you are in Paris. With respect to the other places, we recommend going into the boutique and finding an SA to connect with at least initially. Before asking for a Birkin or Kelly, explain that you love the brand, have purchased items in the past, that you are visiting from your hometown which does not have a local boutique. Further explain that you would love to shop and buy some items with the hopes of getting a quota bag if possible. It is best to be honest but also do not begin the conversation with “I want to buy a Birkin or Kelly.”

Get to know the SA briefly, make conversation, tell them where you are from, and a little about yourself. Then if they seem receptive explain that there is no store for you to shop at home and you must only shop online. Then ask if it is possible to shop with them, purchase the items you desire if they are in stock, and possibly be offered a Birkin or Kelly?

Some stores may tell you upfront they have no bags available. That is a clue that they are unlikely to offer a quota bag to you. Or they may say that is a possibility. It is always a gamble. If you shop and buy items and they offer you a bag, it may not be a color, size, leather, and hardware you desire. If your wish list is open and flexible this route may work for you.

It is definitely worth trying, but we caution against just asking if they will sell you a Birkin or Kelly upfront. They likely will say no. But if you talk with them, gain their trust, look at ready to wear, jewelry, shoes, etc. and then ask if it is possible to be offered a bag, they will likely be more receptive if they have any to offer.

Good luck and let us know how your trip goes.
