Dear PurseBop:
I love Hermès and am traveling to Paris this summer. I need advice on how to present myself to a SA so that they take me seriously. My attempt in the past in various locations in the U.S. have been met with mixed responses telling me I am too young to own a Birkin and to save my money for college tuition. I manage a highly successful company and would love to add a Birkin or Kelly to my collection. Any advice would be welcome.
Dear Take Me Seriously:
Shopping at Hermès or other luxury boutiques in any city is best when you feel confident and are knowledgeable about the brand. It is essential to exude confidence and sophistication regardless of your age. You seem to be both knowledgeable and confident. Here are some tips on how to approach situations where people do not take you seriously.
- Dress appropriately in a well-fitting outfit that reflects your personal style. It doesn’t have to be designer, but it should convey that you appreciate quality and have a discerning taste.
- Pay attention to grooming details. Ensure your hair is neatly styled, your nails are clean, and your overall appearance is polished.
- Walk in with confidence. Maintain good posture and make eye contact when speaking with the sales associate. Confidence is key in commanding respect and attention.
- Educate yourself about the brand and the product you’re interested in. Know the leather choices and colors you would like to request for your first Birkin or Kelly. Understand its history, craftsmanship, and why it’s highly coveted. This will demonstrate your genuine interest and passion for the brand.
- Treat the sales associate with respect and courtesy. Address them politely and professionally, using “sir” or “madam” as appropriate. Show appreciation for their assistance and expertise.
- Clearly communicate what you’re looking for and your budget without hesitation. This shows that you’re serious about making a purchase and helps the sales associate tailor their recommendations to your needs.
- Be patient and understanding. Remember that luxury items like the Birkin or Kelly are in high demand, and there may be limited availability. Avoid being pushy or entitled.
- If you are not offered the bag you’re looking for during your visit, don’t hesitate to ask the sales associate to keep you updated by asking for their contact information and if you may contact them in the future when you return to Paris. Building a rapport with them can increase your chances of securing your dream bag in the future.
Remember, regardless of your age, it’s your demeanor, knowledge, and how you carry yourself that will leave a lasting impression on the sales associate. Good luck with your purchase!
