It is very difficult to answer this question without more information about your tastes, lifestyle, budget, desires, and intended use for the bag. Since a quota bag is traditionally either a Birkin or a Kelly we will limit our response to this parameter notwithstanding that some boutiques have included other bags such as the Constance and any bag with the name Kelly as a quota bag.
The Birkin is iconic. It was of course named after the Brittish model Jane Birkin who met the Hermès CEO at the time on a flight from Paris to London. He created a bag to suit her needs as a working mother and named the bag after her.
If you prefer a handheld bag that is quite roomy in most sizes we suggest you choose a Birkin in the size 25 or 30. Some find the size 25 small for their lifestyle making the size 30 perfect to transition from day to night if necessary. The Birkin 30 is not overly cumbersome while still having capacity for many essentials. And it elevates any style whether casual or dressy.
With respect to color, choosing either Noir, Gold, or Etoupe with gold or palladium hardware will be a bag that is timeless, versatile, and will hold its value. A Birkin is a forever bag that will last a lifetime and never lose its appeal.
Alternatively, if your lifestyle and taste is such that you prefer a shoulder strap on your bag, the Kelly is the perfect choice. It is not as frequently recognizable as the Birkin which is beneficial if your style is more classic and understated. The Kelly 25, 28 or 32 are all good choices depending on how much you intend to carry in your bag on a regular basis. There are two style choices, Sellier or Retourne, and each have their advantages based on your style.
