Dear Pursebop:

I am traveling to Europe and am thinking about purchasing items on that country’s respective Hermès website and shipping them to the store for pickup. Is this allowed? And if so, does this mean I cannot get a tax refund issued since I made the purchase on the website for store pick up?

Dear Online Shopper Abroad:

When traveling to Europe to shop at Hermès and take advantage of the VAT refund, it is best to make your purchases in store. If you order items on the Hermès website for delivery to their store in Europe a VAT refund may not be issued.

Our advice is to shop in person with a Sales Associate. If the item you desire is not available in store, ask the SA to order the item for delivery to the store. It may be possible to purchase the product upon arrival and then request a VAT refund.

If this is not possible and you really desire the item, remember that Hermès prices in Europe are approximately 20-30% less than in the U.S. even without the VAT refund.

Happy shopping and good luck.
