Hi Pursebop,

What is the difference between a dedicated handbag cleaning wipe (e.g. those sold by Havre De Luxe) and any wet wipes (e.g. by Dettol) used to clean luxury handbags? They seem to work the same, minus the marketing as a dedicated bag wipe.

Dear Dedicated Handbag Wipes for Cleaning:

The primary difference between dedicated handbag cleaning wipes and regular wet wipes, like those sold by Dettol, lies in the formulation and purpose of the product. While both types of wipes are designed to clean surfaces, dedicated handbag cleaning wipes are specifically formulated for use on luxury and delicate materials, such as leather, suede, and other high-end fabrics commonly found in designer bags.

We believe it is best to consult the specific designer’s after care or spa department if anything unwanted has appeared on your luxury handbag. Both Hermès and Chanel,  as well as other designer boutiques. have dedicated departments who will analyze and give you advice on how best to proceed.

In response to your question, here are a few reasons why dedicated handbag cleaning wipes might be different from regular wet wipes:

1. Formulation: Dedicated handbag cleaning wipes are formulated with materials that are gentle on delicate surfaces. They often contain specialized cleaning agents that are designed to effectively clean luxury materials without causing damage. Regular wet wipes, on the other hand, may contain disinfectants or chemicals that could potentially harm sensitive materials.

2. pH Balance: Luxury materials often require cleaning products with a specific pH balance to maintain their integrity. Dedicated handbag cleaning wipes are typically pH-balanced to ensure they don’t harm the material’s natural properties. Using wipes with an incorrect pH level might damage the handbag over time.

3. Material Compatibility: Handbag cleaning wipes are tested and designed to be compatible with various luxury materials, including leather, suede, canvas, and more. Using regular wet wipes might not be safe for all types of materials and could lead to discoloration, fading, or other damage.

4. Residue: Dedicated handbag cleaning wipes are often formulated to leave minimal residue, ensuring that the bag’s surface remains clean and free from streaks or marks. Some regular wet wipes might leave residues that could be difficult to remove from certain materials.

5. Fragrance: Handbag cleaning wipes are often fragrance-free or have a mild, neutral scent to prevent any lingering smells on the bag. Regular wet wipes may contain strong fragrances that could be overpowering and difficult to remove from the bag.

While regular wet wipes might work for quick cleanups in an emergency situation, if you have a high-end designer handbag that you want to keep in the best possible condition, it’s generally recommended to first ask your Sales Associate the preferred method of cleaning.

If you decide to use wipes specifically designed for cleaning luxury materials be sure to read the ingredients carefully and test the wipe on an area not visible. These dedicated wipes are formulated to be gentle, effective, and safe for use on expensive handbags. However, if there is an unfortunate situation where make up, wine, or other product accidentally got on your bag, it is best to consult with your Sales Associate and the company’s spa or after care department.
