Dear PurseBop,
I recently sold my Birkin 30 Etain with gold hardware in Togo leather for a Birkin 25 Etoupe with gold hardware in Togo leather. I paid a premium for both as I got them in new condition from resellers. I was convinced I did the right thing until I came across comments on social media saying the Birkin 25 looks comical on tall curvy women. I am 5’6 and pretty curvy (165lbs). Now it has got me thinking, would it look ridiculous on me? I did try on the B25 at Fashionphile before purchasing and it was comfortable. The handles didn’t bother me.
I used the Birkin 30 only once since I had it, which was 3 years ago, and it was too big for my needs – just a cardholder, keys and my phone. I don’t carry much on a day to day basis. It felt weird to carry an empty bag and also felt big as a day to day grab and go bag (for shopping, running errands, going out for casual lunch, dinner, etc.) . I wanted something I can get a lot of use out of. Hence I decided the Birkin 25 would be a good size for my needs. Also, I wasn’t in love with the Etain color. Other Hermes bags in my collection – k25 in rose pourpre and mauve Sylvester, B25 sellier gold with gold hardware. Did I make the right choice?
Dear Questioning Birkin Size:
Fashion preferences and what looks good on an individual can be highly subjective. There is no rule about what size bag is “appropriate” for a particular body type. The Birkin 25 is one of the most popular sizes in the Hermès Birkin bag line for a reason. It’s often chosen for its compact and elegant look.
Ultimately, the best bag size for a person, regardless of their height or body type, depends on personal style, comfort, and the intended use of the bag. Some taller individuals prefer larger bags for practical reasons, such as carrying more items, while others may appreciate the aesthetic of a smaller bag.
Your did your research, tried on the smaller bag in person before purchasing it, and found it met all of your needs. Social media is not an accurate barometer of what is appropriate for each individual. The most important factor is whether you feel confident and comfortable with the bag you chose. It appears you do so use your Birkin 25 with confidence. You made the right decision.
