Dear PurseBop:
A few years ago my love affair with Hermes really amplified. I purchased my first Kelly (vintage black box sellier 32) from Fashionphile. Since then, I have purchased a few shoes, fashion bracelets, and scarfs from several Hermes locations or Hermes.com over the years. I do not have an established SA or a large spend record with the brand directly. All strikes against me, I realize.
I am going to Paris in October and will attempt to get an Hermes leather appointment to obtain my first new Kelly or Birkin from Hermes. I know my odds are low. My question is should I carry my vintage Kelly when I go to Hermes Paris? Or will that hurt my chances because I’ve bought a bag on the secondhand market, which I know is frowned upon or outright forbidden… I would like to show my loyalty to the brand and financial ability to obtain a new bag but I don’t want to start on the wrong foot with a new SA in Paris. Any wisdom is greatly appreciated!
Dear Vintage Kelly 32,
What a beautiful first Hermès bag to start your collection. When visiting Hermès in Paris, carrying your vintage Kelly could actually work in your favor. It demonstrates your appreciation for the brand and familiarity with their products, which can be a positive sign to the sales associate (SA).
If the opportunity arises, you can mention that you’ve acquired your vintage Kelly as a cherished piece, which shows your interest to the brand. This can subtly convey that you’re not just purchasing for status but have a genuine appreciation for Hermès craftsmanship.
When discussing your desire for a new bag, emphasize that you are looking to purchase directly from Hermès and that you’ve planned this visit specifically for that purpose.
A stunning bag is always a great conversation starter with a SA. It definitely shows your loyalty to the brand and should be worn and enjoyed. The key is to express your genuine interest in adding a new piece to your collection.
