Why Do Hermès Picotins and Other Non-Quota Bags Sell for Less of a Premium Than Quota Bags on the Secondary Market?

Hi Pursebop,
Why do Picotins not hold their value as much as other Hermès bags? It seems like even the limited edition Picotins don’t sell for much more over retail on the after market which is surprising to me given the popularity.
Thank you!

Dear Picotin Lover:

Hermès Birkins and Kellys, depending on the age, condition, size, color, and style, can sell for a hefty premium over the retail cost on the secondary market. The reason is because Birkins and Kellys are very difficult to be offered in the boutique and are at the top of the holy grail wishlist. They require an established relationship with a SA, a proven love of the brand, and usually a substantial purchase history.  A new customer generally cannot walk into a Hermès boutique for the first time and request to purchase a Birkin or Kelly. This process increases the value of the bag exponentially because the demand vastly exceeds the supply.

However, non-quota bags such as the Picotin, the Herbag, the Evelyne, the Lindy, and others generally do not see the same increase on the secondary market. Although these bags are not “easy” to obtain, and are very popular, they are not “quota bags” and are relatively easier to purchase and more plentiful than quota bags.

The fact that Hermès non-quota bags retain their initial retail cost or are sold higher on the resale market is a nod to the superior workmanship and materials used in making each bag by hand.

Any Hermès bag a customer is able to purchase is a special bag that should be used and loved.

Good luck and happy shopping.
