As we reported earlier, Chanel handbag prices in the United States officially increased today, January 15, 2021.
Fortunately, the increase is “only” 3-6% across the popular styles. One exception, however, is the Wallet on Chain, for which prices soared 24%. Additionally, we see increased prices for specialty hardwares such as rainbow and black variations.
Although this round of price hikes is within a reasonable and expected range, what takes us by surprise is the frequency of increases that top brands like Louis Vuitton and Chanel instituted during the pandemic.

This is the second round of increases for Chanel in the past year alone. In light of Chanel’s goal of global price harmonization, we expect similar price increases to kick in around the world.

As Chanel prices continue to rise, they approach the Hermès Birkin/Kelly level. You may recall that PurseBop discussed the financial concept of a premium or discount, comparing the percentage difference between one goods value and another. Back in May 2020, the Birkin 30 commanded as little as a 9.2% premium over the Chanel Maxi in May 2020 (based on pricing in euros).

Higher Chanel prices can only push this number down. As a result, we wonder how much more loyal Chanel fans will tolerate. Moreover, Hermès collectors, do you fear Hermès will respond with similar price increases?
