Has anyone noticed Hermès’ recent offerings? They’re incredible. And we are not talking about bags, RTW, or anything else in store. It’s the official Hermès Instagram account. Free to see, it is, to put it mildly, on fire.

Actually, “wow” and “holy cow” are the only (polite) ways to properly describe it. A blend of photos, videos, digitized pics, cartoons, games, etc, all interspersed with a whole lot of information about the brand and its products.
There are the Herbag and Kelly cakes, making us all hungrier for those bags. The dancing orange box is sure to make you smile. Don’t miss the microscopic embroidery versions of the 24/24 or the carousel of Toupets, which also likely introduced that bag to a new group of potential fans. The account is a visual treat for any one even remotely interested in Hermès handbags.
Perhaps the biggest gift though is the product and historical information about Hermès’ products. It’s basically a university level course in Hermès 101, digging into archives and recreating items in contemporary media. Get the tale of the Birkin’s creation straight from the proverbial horse’s mouth. Find out where the names of the Bastia (and don’t miss the chocolate crepe), Bearne wallet, Octogone, and mini Plume originated. And if you were confused, the correct pronunciation of Haut à Courroies is “OH AH KOO ROO AH.” Start practising.

So why is Hermès now so forthcoming? It’s curious. This information has never been hidden, and there’s no lack of secondary sources writing about Birkins and Kellys, among other items. But with this latest (amusing and enriching) content, it seems Hermès is claiming ownership of its past and its products in a way not seen before (or at least in recent times). Could it be part of brand, trademark, and intellectual property protection in general? An attempt to ensure there are no more “metabirkins” or the like encroaching?
That all remains to be seen. For now, at least, enjoy the eye candy!
