Just in time for the holiday season, Cartier has launched five new additions to their Panthère de Cartier line: two sets of earrings, a necklace, a stunning ring, and a new size of the iconic Panthère watch! In honor of these new beauties, Pursebop shares some history behind one of Cartier’s most popular collections.

Inspired by a panther’s grace and strength, the Panthère motif was introduced by the Maison in 1914 as a pattern on a wristwatch. When Jeanne Touissant became Cartier’s creative director of fine jewelry a few years later, the brand began to incorporate the motif into brooches and bracelets. Rumor has it that Toussaint became fascinated by the powerful feline when she spotted it on a safari with Louis Cartier. She helped transform the panther into a symbol of strong, sophisticated, modern luxury and designed pieces that showcased the animal’s sleek, yet elegant form.

During the Art Deco movement, which brought bold designs and geometric shapes into the spotlight, the Panthère de Cartier line gained further popularity. In the 1980s Cartier expanded the line, introducing the Panthère de Cartier watch, which led to a resurgence of interest in the design. The watch, which is still one of the brand’s most distinctive designs today, features a flexible gold bracelet meant to resemble the movement of a panther. It remains a timeless (pun intended), functional, elegant piece that can seamlessly blend into any wrist stack or make a statement on its own. The watch helped align the brand with the image of modern, sophisticated luxury, and it continues to be one of Cartier’s most iconic timepieces.

Fast forward to the 2000s and 2010s, the Panthère de Cartier line now includes rings, earrings, necklaces, and watches. With each new creation, the brand has stayed true to the panther’s feminine, fierce, and graceful aesthetic. The line is the perfect balance of modern and classic, and each piece resembles the feline’s alluring, bold nature. Showcased above are two variations of the Panthère rings. On the left, the panther is but a mere accessory to the stunning solitaire diamond. On the right, the panther stands firmly on its own as it delicately encircles the finger.

This fall, Cartier introduced two new sets of earrings, a necklace, a gorgeous ring, and a new large size of the Panthère watch.

These earrings, which retail for $6,100, come in 18k yellow and pink gold with black lacquer and set with tsavorite garnets and onyx. The white gold version, which is set with emeralds, onyx, and 132 brilliant-cut diamonds, retails for $23,300. The solid yellow and pink gold earrings can be great everyday pieces, while the white gold and diamond version can easily transition to the evening.

This amazing ring, made in 18k white gold, set with emerald, onyx, and 5.12 carats comprised of 591 brilliant-cut diamonds, retails for $231,000. Above, you can see the panther’s beautiful emerald eyes surrounded by diamonds and spotted with onyx.

These earrings, which retail for $180,000, are made with 18k white gold and are each set with emerald, onyx, and 272 brilliant-cut diamonds that total 6.7 carats. These statement earrings would truly be the star of the show at any evening event – between the dangling, dazzling diamonds and the stunning emerald eyes of the panther, these are a true showstopper!

To complete the set, you can also purchase the necklace in 18k white gold, set with emerald, onyx, and 17.9 carats made up of 1,176 brilliant-cut diamonds. The price is available upon request.

Lastly, the iconic Panthère de Cartier watch is now available in a new large model measuring 31mm x 42mm in steel, 18k yellow gold, and steel and 18k yellow gold variations. The watches retail for $30,000, $10,200, and $5,700, respectively. How could you resist this beautiful, detailed watch that doubles as a piece of jewelry?
