For the Chanel Pre-Fall/Winter 2018-19 Metiers show, uber-designer Karl Lagerfeld took us to the new concert hall on the Elbe River in his homeland seaport town of Hamburg, Germany. Hamburg is the largest port city in the country and welcomes cargo ships and cruise lines. This show’s maritime theme was no yachting spree. The inspiration was a working shipping port and it was reflected in the bags.
Box bags resembled shipping containers.
Sailor duffel bags. Could it be the new “it” bag? – a leather-trimmed canvas slung casually over a shoulder. Or an elegant satin version.
And then there were really special bags. A leather accordion . . . in the event you want to play sea shanties with the merchant marines.
An embellished life preserver . . .
And for the practical . . . nuts and bolts.
Along with fisherman hats in leather and tweed were some matching bags.
There were bags attached to bags . . .
If you look carefully, you can find sparkle and pearls. Classics and boys were hard to find in the show pix but it doesn’t mean they weren’t there. We’ll keep looking. Let us know what you find.
As for clothing, it was naturally nautical themed – wide sailor collars and pants in my favorite colors: black, navy, white and gray with hints of red. Color lovers can also find brights among the tweed, some apparently inspired by the look of shipping containers. Thigh high socks and leg warmers completed short skirt outfits of tweed, knit, leather, lace and sparkle. In other words, a classic Chanel case of something for everyone, even landlubbers.
