It’s officially Cherry Blossom season. Chapter Two of the Louis Vuitton x Takashi Murakami collaboration is arriving in March 2025, 20 years after its debut. As we dive into this launch, let’s take a closer look at how 20 years in bloom have reimagined these iconic handbags. We’ll dive into how the reissued pieces compare to the originals, explore how pricing has evolved, and highlight the fresh designs for this new generation of Louis Vuitton x Murakami collectors.
20 Years in Bloom: Cherry Blossom Re-Editions
The 2003 Louis Vuitton x Takashi Murakami Cherry Blossom collection featured standout styles like the Papillon, Sac Retro, and Pochette Accessoires. These bags were originally offered in three variations of the Monogram canvas – classic brown, sakura pink, and a red and cream combination – all adorned with Murakami’s signature Cherry Blossom design.
Now, for the 2025 revival, two of the most beloved styles — the Papillon and Pochette Accessoire return, refreshed with contemporary details while preserving their signature charm. Unlike the earlier collection, this anniversary lineup is offered exclusively in Louis Vuitton’s signature brown Monogram canvas with the pink Cherry Blossom print.

Papillon MM
First up is the Papillon re-edition, also known as the Papillon MM, which has been revived with a contemporary aesthetic.

While it appears more elongated and streamlined, this is due to a slight reduction in depth rather than an actual increase in length. The new design measures 10.6 x 5.1 x 4.3 inches, compared to its 2003 predecessor at 11 x 5.1 x 5.3 inches. With this subtle refinement, the overall proportions give the illusion of a longer, sleeker silhouette while maintaining the bag’s signature cylindrical structure. The re-edition features noticeably longer shoulder straps, providing a more comfortable fit and a less snug underarm placement compared to the 2003 version’s 5.3-inch strap drop.

One of the most notable changes is the absence of the original flap opening, which was secured with a discreet magnetic fastening beneath the Vachetta bow detail and padlock. In its place, the Papillon MM features a fully zippered top closure. While the new design retains the classic Vachetta leather trim, it takes on a sleeker, more refined look. Shedding the girly extras, this re-edition omits the studded embellishments, bow details, and clochette that were a signature of the Y2K iteration.
A standout update is the addition of the Papillon Mini – a perfectly scaled-down version in the same Cherry Blossom-printed Monogram. The “mini me” can hang from the main bag with its Vachetta leather shoulder strap or detach and be carried on its own. Either way, it’s a playful, contemporary take on the Cherry Blossom aesthetic.

Pochette Accessoires
And then there’s the Pochette Accessoires – an enduring Louis Vuitton icon. Fans of the Cherry Blossom edition will be pleased to see that much of the original design remains intact.

The signature Vachetta leather bow remains on the front, now complemented by an LV padlock for a subtle hardware update. Unlike the Papillon MM, this re-edition retains its original studded detailing along the Vachetta leather trim, staying true to the Y2K aesthetic.

In terms of proportions, the Cherry Blossom Pochette Accessoires remains in line with Louis Vuitton’s classic sizing, measuring 9.3 x 5.3 x 1.6 inches. The timeless Vachetta short shoulder strap is still present, but this time, it’s accompanied by a detachable chain strap, offering added versatility.

Then vs. Now: Price Evolution of the Cherry Blossom Re-Issues
Louis Vuitton’s prices have steadily increased over the years, with iconic styles like the Speedy experiencing a 176% price hike over the past two decades. Now, with the buzz surrounding the 2025 Louis Vuitton x Takashi Murakami collaborations, original 2003 Cherry Blossom pieces are fetching even higher price tags on the pre-loved market. And, of course, the reissued collection introduces a new era of Murakami price points. . .

To see how the reissued Papillon MM and Pochette Accessoires measure up, let’s take a look at their price evolution over the last 20 years.
Papillon MM
Double the bags, quadruple the price? With the added mini Papillon, a fair comparison is tough. However, in 2003, the Cherry Blossom Papillon retailed for $880 (about $1,520 in today’s dollar purchasing power). The 2025 version sells at $3,550, about four times the original (double when inflation is considered).
Louis Vuitton x Murakami Cherry Blossom | Price 2003 (USD) | Price 2025 (USD) | Price Increase (USD) | Increase (%) |
Papillon MM | $880 | $3,550 | $2,670 | 303% |
For those who already own the classic version, the fresh new design and extra versatility could make this price jump feel worth making another investment. But if you are thinking of tapping the secondary market for the original and getting a bargain? Well, maybe not. The 2005 Cherry Blossom Papillon sells for around $2,450 pre-loved (depending on condition), about $1000 less than a brand new 2025 edition.
Pochette Accessoires
In the early 2000s, the Pochette Accessoires was considered the entry-level Louis Vuitton piece, originally just under $200. Over the years, its price has skyrocketed, with the standard version now retailing for $1,550.
Louis Vuitton x Murakami Cherry Blossom | Price 2003 (USD) | Price 2025 (USD) | Price Increase (USD) | Increase (%) |
Pochette Accessoires | $395 | $2,100 | $1,705 | 432% |
Limited-edition items typically include higher price tags, and that was true for the Takashi Murakami Cherry Blossom Pochette design, which in 2003 cost $395 (or about $200 more than the original). In 2025 dollars, that’s the equivalent of about $643. Now contrast that with the price point of the new Cherry Blossom Pochette of $2,100, and it is clear how the price has spiked.
If you expect to find a bargain in the secondary market for the original, think again. Vintage Cherry Blossom Pochette Accessoires bags typically fetch between $2,250 and $3,000 – more than the retail price of the 2025 version.
New Blooms: Fresh Designs for 2025
All that blooms with the 2025 collection is not a refresh of the early aught designs. The 2025 Louis Vuitton x Takashi Murakami Cherry Blossom collection introduces an exciting array of new styles, perfect for those who missed out on the original lineup – or for those looking to expand beyond their vintage Murakami pieces.

For those drawn to the classic Monogram canvas, there are several options. Getting the flowery treatment are classics like the Speedy 25, Nano Bucket, and Boulogne, all priced at $2,770. Those looking for larger styles can opt for the OnTheGo PM at $3,550, or explore Louis Vuitton’s travel range, which features the Keepall 45 Bandoulière, Horizon 55, and the Rolling Trunk.

Leading the lineup is the NéoNoé BB, the only bag in this collection crafted from Empreinte leather. Retaining its signature bucket shape, this version stands out with an enamel motif slider in place of the traditional leather tab securing the drawstring closure. The NéoNoé BB retails for $2,890.

NEONOE BB POIGNEE €2,600
For lovers of Epi leather, there are two options. The Alma BB’s structured silhouette is now enhanced with Murakami’s signature Cherry Blossom motif and retails for $2,770. Meanwhile, the Marellini is accessorized with detachable and sometimes oversized, bag charms. A small slip pocket on the front, featuring an LV cut-out, holds a mirror adorned with the floral design, attached with a delicate chain. A second, larger Cherry Blossom charm adds a bolder, playful touch. The Marellini is also priced at $2,770.

Completing the 2025 collection are the Capucines, available in three variations.

The first is the Mini size in Sakura pink leather, intricately beaded with the cherry blossom design, offering a refined yet playful take on the Murakami motif.

Next, the slightly larger Capucines BB makes its debut in the Cherry Blossom line, featuring a Rose pink shade and contrasting Sakura pink enamel LV. Adorned with an enamel Cherry Blossom design on its top handle, this unique piece offers a modern twist.

The ultimate showpiece is the Capucines Mini in Snow White shiny crocodile leather, destined to be a true collector’s piece as it produced in very limited quantities. Adorned with a Sakura pink crystal strass LV and a removable hand-beaded cherry blossom tag. This VVIP-exclusive design can be styled in two ways – fully embracing the charm of the Cherry Blossom collection or opting for a sleek, refined look that lets the exotic leather take center stage.
