This can only mean one thing – the hotly anticipated 2023 Met Gala will soon be upon us. The biggest fashion event of the year most certainly puts a spring in our step! And this year’s theme hits close to every Chanel-lover’s heart: its late great designer Karl Lagerfeld. But more on that ahead.

When is the 2023 Met Gala?
Quite possibly the hottest ticket in town, there is no guesswork as to the date of the Met Gala. It falls on the first Monday of May each year. The 2023 event is no exception and will be held on Monday, May 1. Celebrities from across the globe will gather and unite, first on the steps of The Met Museum in New York City, and then inside, to celebrate the world of fashion.

Fashion icon and Condé Nast’s Global Chief Content Officer (and former Editor in Chief of Vogue) Anna Wintour runs the event. In addition to curating a who’s who of fashion attendees, the Gala serves as a fundraiser for the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Traditionally, the event is the opening celebration for the museum’s annual fashion exhibit. Since the Gala’s debut back in 1995, the Met Gala has become the biggest fashion celebration of the year.
What is this year’s Met Gala theme?
So, as for the theme of this year’s Met Gala, it’s slightly different than in recent years. Last year, in 2022, the theme was Gilded Glamour. In 2021 it was American Independence. These themes are open to interpretation. And over the years, we have seen film stars and models don haute couture gowns and elaborate costumes, as instructed by Anna Wintour’s themes.
This year, however, signals a change. The theme – and its accompanying exhibit – can be expressed in one word – Karl. And no one is left wondering Karl who? Of course, it is the late Karl Lagerfeld, of Chanel design fame, as well as his eponymous brand, Fendi, and Chloe.

Titled ‘Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty’ the entire event is a tribute to the legendary German Designer, who sadly passed away in 2019. Of course, with such a huge portfolio, there is a treasure trove of aesthetics and eras that come to mind for inspiration. We expect to see some amazing salutes and some iconic vintage Chanel pieces on this year’s red carpet. Who will dare to accessorize with a Choupette?

The accompanying exhibition, with the same title, will showcase over 150 looks from the late designer. Exploring Lagerfeld’s impressive creative portfolio, the exhibit will display work from the 1950s until his final collections in 2019. The show will include iconic pieces from Lagerfeld’s time as creative director at Chanel, Chloé and Fendi, as well as his time at the helm of Balmain and Patou. Subsequently, the garments will appear alongside Lagerfeld’s original sketches – displaying a true vision of Karl. A real must-see for any fashion lover, or Lagerfeld fan.
Who’s invited to the 2023 Met Gala?
Celebs from across the globe will gather to celebrate fashion at this year’s Met Gala. Among the confirmed lucky invites are Dua Lipa, Michaela Coel, Roger Federer, and Penélope Cruz, who will serve as the evening’s official co-chairs. Above all, the question on everyone’s lips is, who will secure their spot on the best-dressed list?

Moreover, with plenty of Karl Lagerfeld’s muses likely to attend the 2023 Met Gala – it’s going to be a race to the best-dressed. For instance, are we likely to see archival Chanel couture pieces grace our presence on Blake Lively? Or will we see Lily-Rose Depp sporting a classic 90s Chloé girl look? Perhaps a head-to-toe vintage ‘Fun Fur’ Fendi ensemble on Penélope Cruz wouldn’t look out of place. Indeed, the possibilities are endless!

Perhaps, the most important guest of all, has to be Choupette Lagerfeld. Recently confirmed on April 11, 2023, the much adored and pampered feline, Choupette will be attending the Gala. This is certainly the most exciting attendee to date! We can’t wait to see if she will be sporting a fabulous vintage Chanel piece.
Who’s not made the guest list for the 2023 Met Gala?
Indeed, rumours surrounding the guest list have been flying around the fashion world. Hence, multiple sources have suggested that Anna Wintour may be cracking and whittling down her guest list this year! Last year marked the first Met Gala in which all of the Kardashian family attended the event. Consequently, sources suggest that Wintour will not be inviting any of the Kardashian family to the 2023 Met Gala. However, everything has remained under wraps (for now) – and no family member has announced if they will or won’t be attending the event.
