Did You Know the Hermès Birkin is the Most Instagrammed Bag of All Time?

Can you guess which other designs made the top 10 list?

For many handbag lovers, “if you’ve got it flaunt it” leads to viral posts on social media. In fact, luxury fashion and social media were practically made for each other. For influencers and brands it’s big business. Whether Instagram, YouTube reveal videos, or the more recent IG reels and TikToks, it’s more than just eye candy. These posts drive demand and sales.

But, a new study looking at the most Instagrammed bags ever, caught our attention. Perhaps you won’t find many surprises among the top ten. Or, maybe your favorite is missing.

Conducted by online marketplace, OnBuy, the study ranks bags based on the number of posts made hashtagging the design. These are the top 10 most Instagrammed bags of all time.

Hint – the Birkin comes out on top, closely followed by the Kelly and both are miles ahead of the competition!

1. Hermès Birkin - 5,914,103 Hashtagged Posts

It’s no surprise that the most famous and lusted after handbag of all time ranks first place as the most Instagrammed bag ever. Reality megastar Kylie Jenner regularly posts snaps of her seemingly never ending collection of exotic and rare Birkins. And high profile fashion influencers like @jackieaina and @chiaraferragni can’t seem to stop posting pictures of the famous Hermès bag.

The Birkin earned a whopping 5,914,103 hashtagged posts, making it the most Instagrammed bag of all time. This isn’t the only title it holds. The Hermès white Himalaya crocodile diamond Birkin became the most expensive handbag ever sold at auction after it was sold for nearly $380,000 by Christie’s Hong Kong back in 2017. The style is also a favorite among our PurseBop IG community. WARNING – some serious Instagram eye candy below!

Again, we are not shocked that another jewel in the Hermès crown has bagged second place on this list. With 5,451,995 hashtagged posts, the Kelly barely trails the Birkin in terms of Instagrammable allure. Will it catch up anytime soon?

3. Lady Dior - 2,091,718 Hashtagged Posts

The Lady Dior sprung to handbag royalty after being pictured on the arm of one of the most famous women in modern times – Lady Diana. Subsequently, the House named the bag in her honor. This compact Dior top-handle has over 2 million Instagram posts using the hashtag, making it a staple on the IG feeds of luxury fashion fanatics.

4. Gucci GG Marmont - 976,651 Hashtagged Posts

In 2016, Gucci’s creative director Alessandro Michele debuted the Gucci GG Marmont bag. He modelled the bag’s bold GG insignia after a ‘70s Gucci belt, sending the fashion world into a frenzy. Bag lovers everywhere sought to get a hold of this hot new design. Excitement for the GG Marmont was equally extreme on Instagram, with influencers proudly posting pictures toting Michele’s new design. The bag remains a Gucci favorite today.

5. Chanel Boy - 849,059 Hashtagged Posts

The mark of a special bag is when it holds all the allure and prestige of a decades old classic despite only having a few years under its belt. The Chanel Boy epitomizes this. Introduced by Karl Lagerfeld in 2011, the Boy bag is just 10 years old. Despite its relative youth, compared to Chanel’s many other esteemed designs, it’s a house favorite. The bag’s structured finish and legions of offerings in hypnotic colorways make it the perfect Instagram photo companion.  Surprisingly, the Boy ranked higher than the Classic Flap on IG hashtags.

6. Céline Trapeze - 659,694 Hashtagged Posts

The Céline Trapeze is that go-to roomy tote that bag lovers couldn’t get enough of during the early 2010s. While it may never have achieved the ‘It’ bag level of status that the Céline Luggage Tote, released the same year, did, it enjoyed steady, continued popularity. Both bags were designed by Céline’s then creative director Phoebe Philo. Interestingly, despite the Trapeze having in excess of 650,000 hashtagged posts on Instagram, the better known Luggage Tote fails to rank on this list at all. Perhaps this goes to show the appeal of a sleek and understated design, and how, despite the hype, being an ‘It’ bag isn’t everything. The Céline Trapeze was discontinued a few years ago but is readily available on the resale market.

7. Gucci Dionysus - 646,880 Hashtagged Posts

You couldn’t go onto the Instagram app between 2017 and 2018 without seeing a Gucci Dionysus on an influencer’s arm. Named after the Greek God Dionysus, son of Zeus, the bag, along with Gucci’s statement T-shirts and house monogram was everywhere a few years ago. Another one of Alessandro Michele’s designs, the style has become almost synonymous with the house.

8. Dior Saddle Bag - 558,122 Hashtagged Posts

This next bag needs no introduction. First designed by John Galliano for Dior’s spring/summer 2000 collection, the unusual kidney-shaped style was an instant success. Dior’s accessories sales rose later that year. And after Sex and the City’s Carrie Bradshaw was spotted sporting one, the Dior Saddle achieved ‘It’ bag status. In a lucrative move, the house re-released the Dior Saddle bag in 2018 to wild success. The style became an ‘It’ bag all over again, which, of course, in the digital age means featuring in plenty of Instagram posts.

9. Chanel Flap Bag - 532,139 Hashtagged Posts

Talk about needing no introduction, the Chanel Flap bag remains one of the most instantly recognizable and sought-after bags in the world. First designed by Coco Chanel herself in 1955 as the 2.55 Flap bag, it has been an icon of the house ever since. With new variations of this classic style released every season, the Chanel Flap bag isn’t dropping out of this top 10 anytime soon!

10. Givenchy Antigona Bag - 529,079 Hashtagged Posts

At just over a decade old, the Givenchy Antigona remains lustworthy. The ultra sleek and structured design continues to drive a high demand, making the style a timeless classic for Givenchy. It’s enjoyed continued popularity amongst the influencer crowd for some time now, with many favoring the matte black leather and crocodile effect finishes.

Notably, newer must-have styles such as Bottega Veneta’s The Pouch and Jacquemus’ Le Chiquito are missing from this list. And, perhaps shockingly absent are Louis Vuitton and Fendi.

What bags do you think are missing from the top 10? Did any rankings surprise you? Let us know.
