With Heidi Slimane officially leaving his role as creative director at Celine on October 2, it is clear he has left a significant Triomphe-shaped mark during his seven-year tenure. Known for creating modern classics like the Teen Triomphe, Victoire, and Lola, Slimane’s influence on the brand is undeniable.
While we anticipate Michael Rider stepping into the creative leader role at Celine, it’s worth noting his impressive background. Coming from Polo Ralph Lauren, he is also a former ready-to-wear design director under Phoebe Philo at Celine – could we see a resurgence of Philo’s iconic minimalist style? Perhaps we’ll see the return of the accent on the ‘e,’ making Celine, Céline once more, or the reintroduction of iconic Philo-era bags like the Trio and Trapeze? Only time will tell.
As we eagerly await his direction, let’s explore the three standout Celine bags that are set to make a statement for Winter 2024.
Garance
Celine’s latest variation under the Triomphe series is a chic and able competitor to the beloved Teen Triomphe. First unveiled in the Winter 2024 collection, the Teen Garance debuted with a striking glossy patent finish.
Taking cues from the Teen Triomphe, the Garance shares similar dimensions measuring 18.5 x 13.5 x 7 cm (7 x 5 x 3 inches), and features the iconic Triomphe emblem closure. Inside, it’s just as functional, with three compartments and a zippered pocket for optimal organization.
One of the standout features of the Teen Garance is its unique strap design. Designed exclusively for shoulder or hand carry, the strap is secured by sleek gold-tone hardware and has a 24cm (9-inch) drop, offering a refined touch to its overall look.
Currently only available in the Teen size, the Garance comes exclusively in three patent leather calfskin options – classic Black, rich Dark Brown, and eye-catching Black and White two-tone variation. Priced at €3,400 (£2,950/$4,100), it is slightly more than the Teen Triomphe.
Mini Claude
Mini bags remain big business, and with that Celine has given its adorable Mini Claude a seasonal makeover. Crafted in a combination of suede calfskin and trimmed in natural shearling, the latest Mini Claude exudes cozy charm, perfect for winter.
Measuring a petite 11 x 9.5 x 4 cm (4 x 4 x 2 inches), it features one compartment to house your keys and small cosmetics, along with an inner flat pocket for cards. While it may not accommodate your phone, that’s what coat pockets are for, right?
Finished with a substantial gold-tone chain, Mini Claude can be styled crossbody or on the shoulder, and it is secured with a Triomphe metallic snap button closure. Although it’s mini in size, the Mini Claude certainly packs a punch in style, retailing for €1,450 (£1,350/$1,850).
Besace Marley
Originally introduced in the Fall 2022 collection, the Besace Marley features the much-loved satchel silhouette of the Besace Clea, elevated with a refined handle design for added sophistication. This season, Celine takes it a step further, with the introduction of a sleek all-black aesthetic.
While the glossy patent exterior shines, the bag’s iconic Triomphe hardware is reimagined in matte black, providing a chic contrast. The chunky chain strap has a drop of 15 cm (6-inch) drop, allowing for versatile styling—handheld or in the crook of the arm.
Available in a small size, it measures 19.5 x 15 x 6 cm (8 x 6 x 2 inches), making it perfect for day-to-night wear. Inside, you’ll find one main compartment and an inner flat pocket, secured with a snap button closure.
Priced at €2,400 (£2,220/$3,100), it’s a stylish addition to any collection.
