Turn Heads Twice: Louis Vuitton Neverfull Inside Out

Perhaps one of the most iconic tote bags of all time, Louis Vuitton’s Neverfull holds a special place in countless handbag collections. First introduced in 2007 as a seasonal beach bag, the Neverfull quickly found its way into the permanent Louis Vuitton lineup and has since been an everyday icon for 17 years. Originally available in classic Monogram canvas, the design later expanded to include the Damier and non-reversible leather versions like Epi and Empreinte.

Sometimes described as Louis Vuitton’s answer to Goyard’s timeless totes, versatility, and functionality was always the key message of the Neverfull. Boasting about its double handles able to sustain 200 lbs of pressure, this was the bag to do it all and carry it all. The innovative reversible design of the coated canvas versions allows the bag to be flipped inside out, revealing a chic striped textile lining. Over the years, Louis Vuitton expanded its range of interior colors. However, despite this feature, few Neverfull owners take advantage of it. Whether due to a lack of awareness about its functionality or simply a preference for the classic aesthetic, the Neverfull is predominantly styled with the Monogram (or Damier) on display.

For years, the Neverfull reigned as one of Louis Vuitton’s most coveted offerings. However, in 2023, the once-ubiquitous tote became the Never-available. Louis Vuitton pulled the beloved tote from the shelves of its boutiques, leaving customers unable to purchase leather, Monogram, or Damier iterations directly. Instead, potential buyers were placed on a waitlist for their ideal combination, reminiscent of Hermès’ exclusivity and elevating the Neverfull to an almost unattainable status – a first for the brand.

Neverfull Inside Out: Reversible Revelations

Fast forward to 2024, and Louis Vuitton has something exciting in store for fans of this iconic tote. On September 20th, the brand launched the new Neverfull Inside Out. While the original Neverfull remains available, this revamped version playfully embraces its dual nature by boldly adding “Inside Out” to its name. Perhaps Louis Vuitton is giving a cheeky nod to those who may not have fully explored its reversible feature before — now there’s no mistaking what this tote can do!

The updates to the design extend beyond just the name. The Neverfull Inside Out boasts a refreshed aesthetic that includes two distinct styles. A key feature of both options is the inclusion of the functional bandoulière shoulder strap. Crafted with Monogram canvas on one side and a solid color on the reverse, this strap design perfectly reflects the Inside Out concept. Removable and adjustable, this wide canvas strap offers versatile styling options, allowing the bag to be worn comfortably on the shoulder or across the body — ultimately elevating the functionality of the classic Neverfull to new heights.

Let’s take a closer look at the two new designs.

Neverfull Inside Out: Luxe Leather

Among the variations introduced, the leather-reverse version stands out as perhaps the most anticipated. This design features Monogram canvas on one side and luxurious-grained cowhide leather on the reverse, with the classic Vachetta trim also replaced by grained leather. Effortlessly reversible, you can flip the bag inside out to switch up your style throughout the week, or as often as your mood changes. Reminiscent of Louis Vuitton’s low-key luxury lineup, it can be styled with a plain leather exterior for a more discreet look, with just a touch of Monogram canvas peeking out from the reverse.

The removable pouch, introduced to the Neverfull in 2013, remains a key feature across all variations of the bag. In the classic Monogram and Damier versions, the pouch matches the canvas. However, leather versions differ – the Epi design features a Monogram canvas pouch, while the Empreinte has a pouch made in the same embossed leather.

In the Neverfull Inside Out leather design, the pouch is crafted from the same luxurious-grained calfskin as the bag’s interior when reversed. Adding a touch of heritage, this version showcases the iconic stripe design seen on the interior pockets of the original Neverfull. This practical pouch can be used independently or attached as an exterior pocket for added convenience.

This specific style is currently offered in two sizes – the petite BB and the everyday appropriate MM. It’s no surprise that this leather version is the most expensive option within the new Neverfull Inside Out lineup – coming in at approximately $300 more than the Neverfull Empreinte MM. However, given its versatile design, you could argue it’s like having two bags in one.

In terms of color options – the Neverfull Inside Out BB is offered in Black and the lively Rose Pondichery shade. The larger MM size comes in two timeless shades – Tan and Black. Each design is complemented by the signature Monogram canvas.

Neverfull Inside Out: Classic Canvas

For fans of the original design, the Neverfull Inside Out in Monogram canvas with textile retains all the signature features that made the OG a staple, now with enhancements. The fixed zip pocket detail is still included, while the new functional bandoulière strap offers added versatility.

The standout changes come in the form of fresh colorways, and of course, the pricing. In terms of pricing, the Neverfull Inside Out MM is $270 more than the original design. So if the allure of fresh colorways and the addition of a bandoulière strap appeal to you, then this upgrade could be a worthy investment.

Meanwhile, the larger GM size showcases a beige reverse design, adorned with a colorful stamp pattern that pays homage to Louis Vuitton’s rich travel heritage.

The launch of the Neverfull Inside Out marks an exciting chapter in the legacy of Louis Vuitton’s iconic tote. Whether we see fresh colorways and an expanded size range added to the Neverfull Inside Out lineup — only time will tell. However, with its clever design updates and versatile options, the collection invites both longtime fans and newcomers to embrace the bag’s multifaceted nature.
