The Chanel Classic Mini rectangle bag is so consistently popular that it’s no surprise Chanel expanded the options. In early 2021, the Classic Mini Flap bag with Handle (also referred to as the Classic Mini Handle) launched. Unlike the Coco Handle, which initially faced criticism, the Classic Mini Handle was an immediate hit. Even better for fans, this season there was no price increase. When compared to the cost of the Classic Flap, the Classic Mini (with or without a handle) remains an excellent value and perhaps should be in every Chanel lover’s collection.

So what makes the Classic Mini Handle so special? Is it the quintessential Chanel design, the rectangular shape, the mini size, the capacity, the option to wear crossbody or by hand, the leather choices, or the stunning colors? Or all of the above? Let’s explore in more detail.

Classic Design
Clearly, Chanel’s classic diamond quilted design and double CC interlock clasp is a tried and true winning formula. And a mini version of the popular Classic Flap will always be a good choice.
As with the regular Mini, the Classic Mini Handle incorporates all the elements of the classic flap sans the interior second flap, which many find cumbersome and unnecessary. As a result, this bag actually holds as much inside as, and possibly more than, the small Classic Flap.

Mimicking its larger sisters, the Classic Mini Handle boasts the external back pocket, two internal pockets, and an interlaced chain and leather shoulder strap that is long enough to wear crossbody. To be fair, the strap is thinner than the one on the larger Classics leading skeptics to suspect it would cheapen its appearance and feel awkward. The reality is to the contrary; it makes the bag extremely lightweight, easy to wear, and comfortable.
Top Handle
The big distinguishing feature of this Classic Mini is the top handle. Rounded on top and flat on the inside, the handle attaches to the bag with fixed metal loops.

Shoulder Strap
Another difference between the Classic Mini rectangle and the Classic Mini Handle is in the shoulder straps. On the Classic Mini rectangle, the strap is thicker than on the handled iteration. While there may be some bag to bag variation in length, the two models are generally the same.

Additionally, the Classic Mini rectangle strap attaches to the bag with two round grommet holes. As a result, the strap can be pulled inside the bag to shorten or hide it completely.
The Classic Mini Handle strap, on the other hand, is attached to the exterior of the top handle (similar to the Hermès Kelly design). However, unlike the Kelly and the more comparable Chanel Coco Handle, the strap is not removable.

Dimensions
From a design, shape, and size perspective, both inside and out, the Classic Mini Handle is identical to its sister, the Classic Mini rectangle. Both mini styles measure 7.8” x 4.7” x 2.3” with quilted diamond stitching, two interior pockets and one exterior pocket.

Material
Despite the plethora of known Chanel materials, the first Classic Mini Handle (21S) was produced only in iridescent caviar leather. For Classic Mini lovers, this was a big deal since Chanel ceased using caviar on minis back in 2018. Since then, Classic Mini rectangle colors in soft lambskin.
Despite the initial caviar version, the later Classic Mini Handle models were solely in lambskin. Whether caviar leather is in the future for either mini is unclear. For now, expect lambskin.
Colors
The first iterations of the Classic Mini Handle were black, gray, and light beige iridescent caviar leather. Following that, a number of color options appeared, albeit in lambskin, as discussed above. Presently for 22P, there are four lambskin colors: light pink (NG750), light blue (NF290), red (NG757), and light pink & light green (NH297).
Price
As with Chanel prices generally, prices for the Classic Mini Handle have risen. It was $4300 when originally released. Following one price increase, it presently sells for $4800. The Classic Mini rectangle remains at $4400. Both bags escaped the most recent price increase in mid-January 2022.
Best Chanel Value
From a value standpoint, you can’t go wrong with either the Classic Mini Handle or the Classic Mini rectangle. These bags are popular for many reasons. In fact, as compared to their larger sisters, they are arguably the best value for a classic flap. You get the most iconic elements of a classic flap without the high price tag. Quilting, CC clasp, leather chain strap, exterior and interior pockets are all included.

Moreover, the minis hold as much, or possibly more, than the small Classic Flap. Elegant and regal, they are versatile as a crossbody or hand held bag whether for evening, daytime, or day to evening. Best of all, these minis retain their value as evidenced by the prices listed on the secondary market. Overall, both are an excellent choice that will complement any handbag collection.

I admit it, I was the person who said I was done buying Chanel classic flaps after the last two huge price increases. I bought three classic flaps in early 2021 and convinced myself that my collection of Chanel bags was complete. What more could I really “need”?
Until… I saw the new 22C and 22P pink colors circulating on Instagram. Although beautiful, I knew I could resist the 22C pink classic flap. But the 22P light pink caught my eye. Could “it” be the perfect Chanel pink the way my Rose Sakura Birkin is the perfect Hermès pink?

I texted both of my SAs early on asking about the light pink caviar Classic Flap. They replied I was too early. Then the 22P collection dropped this week. I visited my home boutique ostensibly to check out the pink ready-to-wear. And, of course, any other new pink items.
After purchasing a pink sweater I inquired about the light pink caviar classic flap. My SA said she had not seen one yet, but since I already had two pink classic flaps, it would be redundant. She must have forgotten that a pink lover does not know the meaning of redundant!
However, she did speak about a Classic Mini Flap Bag with Handle in light pink lambskin that I should consider when it arrives. I saw the photo and agreed it might complement my collection.
Two days later she texted me with a photo of the bag. Although she could not hold the bag, I could pay for it with no obligation. In minutes the transaction was complete and I had an appointment to pick it up the next day.
When my SA unboxed the Classic Mini Handle I knew immediately it was the perfect addition. The light pink lambskin felt soft as a baby’s skin, and the color was so bright, clean, and fresh looking that I could not resist. A true pastel pink.
Since I did not have a Classic Mini, and wearing a crossbody bag lately was becoming necessary due to the increase in local crime, I knew I was keeping this bag.
Although I am madly in love with my new lovely pink Classic Mini Handle, I also reserved the caviar Classic Flap in light pink. If this is truly my perfect Chanel pink color, then I have to try to get the caviar version as well. Don’t ask!
Unfortunately, this “new” reservation system is far from perfect. Despite placing a reserve request on a bag, there is no guarantee you will get offered that bag. But I have to try. I will update you if I get “the text”.
